Lawrence D. "Larry" Freier, formerly of Bismarck, ND, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at the Prescott, AZ VA Hospital following two major back surgeries in November for a cancerous tumor.

Services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 24, at Legacy United Methodist Church, 924 North 11th Street, Bismarck, with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm Monday, January 23, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a time of sharing will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born on October 19, 1938, to Jacob and Otilla (Wentz) Freier at the farmstead south of Streeter, ND. Larry attended farm school through the 8th grade. He completed his GED while serving in the US Army. He also completed 2 semester credits in management from the University of Virginia.

In 1955 he moved to Bismarck, ND, and worked for Dan's Super Valu until the end of December, 1956. In January, 1957, Larry joined the US Army. He served in the Army until 1978, a total of 22 years, retiring as an E8 Master Sergeant receiving many medals and awards. Larry was stationed in Germany, Korea and served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. While stationed in Germany, he married Anita Feiltz on June 16, 1959. While Larry was stationed in Korea he adopted Connie, a 5 year old Korean girl.

Larry lived in various states during his service and after retirement. He had various business interests. In 1995, Larry and Wallace Perman bought the Bismarck Motor Hotel. In 2000 he sold the motel and bought a home at Brush Lake by Mercer, ND as his retirement home. Larry married Coreen Joblinski on February 2, 2001, in Las Vegas, NV. They lived at the lake in the summer and during the winter they drove their motorhome to Texas, Arizona and other states. They bought a home in Bismarck, ND in 2007. After traveling south for several winters, they decided to buy a home in Prescott Valley, AZ, in 2011.

Larry loved traveling, fishing, hunting, growing a large vegetable garden and especially decorating their home for Christmas. He was very proud of his military career.

He is survived by his wife, Coreen, of Prescott Valley, AZ; daughter, Connie (Ramon) Wallen of Columbia, SC; one stepdaughter, Tana Becker of Bismarck, ND; two stepsons, Greg Joblinski of Mandan, ND, and Michael Joblinski of Bismarck, ND; six step grandchildren, Madison, Michael, Cole, Keely, Kade and Julianna Rose; his three sisters, Frances (Wallace) Perman, Bismarck, ND; Esther Perman, Streeter, ND, Betty Freier, Bismarck, ND; his three brothers, Lonnie (Sandy) Freier, Glyndon, MN, Terry (Sara Lee) Fargo, ND, and Tom (Melinda) Freier, Fargo, ND; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Freier, Medina, ND, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene and Floyd; and a brother-in-law, Glen Perman.
