Shirley was born February 12, 1932, in Bismarck, ND, the daughter of Lou and Florence (Bye) Gallagher. Shirley enjoyed the catholic religion and schooling, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1951. She went on to attend Bismarck State College where she was an honor student and graduated in 1953. Shirley married Gerald Shaw in Bismarck in 1954. She received a two-year scholarship to the University of Denver which she attended with Gerald. One of the family stories was that Shirley dressed up like a man and took final tests for her new husband! Shirley graduated from the University of Denver in 1956 with her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Shirley and Gerald lived in Mandan and moved to Bismarck in 1964. She worked selling the World Book, working for Conlins, the Legislature and Job Service of ND. While working for Job Service she went to school in Fargo in 1972 to earn her masters in counseling. To her friends, Shirley wasn't known as much of a talker, but her engaging smile and natural listening ability is what family and friends will miss.
Shirley retired early from Job Service due to health reasons. The medical community never gave a name to the disease that plagued Shirley's balance and sight. When her health deteriorated in 1984, her family took care of her. Even though they would joke, they weren't sure, who was taking care of whom.
Shirley loved art and teaching art, as well as working with charcoal herself.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sandra Shaw-Farrell; her son, Greg; her grandchildren, Michael, and Nicki (Jeremy), and Jesse, Tessa, Taylor and Ryker; her great-granddaughter, Chloe and great-grandsons, Harlan and Thomas; and her brother, Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald in 2002 and her parents.
