Adam Schumacher, 39, Bismarck, died August 9, 2015, as a result of melanoma cancer, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 13, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 519 Raymond St, Bismarck, with Rev. Msgr. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm Wednesday, August 12, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm, with Deacon Tony Ternes presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.Adam was born in Devils Lake, ND, on July 30, 1976, the son of Leslie and Phyllis (Haaland) Schumacher. He was raised and attended schools in Minot, was chosen as a delegate to the US Senate Youth Program in 1993 and graduated valedictorian at Minot High School in 1994. Adam was also chosen as a US Presidential Scholar in 1994. Adam then graduated Summa Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa from Georgetown University with a degree in international economics in 1998. He received the John Carroll Scholar, the University's most prestigious scholarship, the Peter Krogh Scholar, the highest honor for the School of Foreign Service, and was the student speaker at the awards ceremony for the School for Foreign Service. Adam later earned his Master's Degree in Applied Economics from John Hopkins University in 2009. Adam joined the Washington DC office of the Brattle Group, an economic consulting firm. He was awarded the Bill Moss Prize in recognition of excellence in developing and mentoring fellow workers, and was promoted to associate in 2004 and senior associate in 2009. He was the initial recipient of the Brattle Award in 2015, which was just given weeks ago and truly summarized Adam's total approach to life. The inaugural award was made by the Board to the man who inspired Brattle to launch it: "Our dear friend Adam Schumacher, for showing us how to pursue relentless collaboration, respect, integrity, and performance, even under the most challenging circumstances. All who have worked with Adam have been amazed at what a wonderful and effective colleague he is in ways that brim over with collegiality, cooperation, equanimity, and concern for others, while simultaneously achieving and motivating the highest work standards."Although having muscular dystrophy, Adam refused to be defined by the disease, and rather chose to be known for his intellect and personality. He overcame numerous hardships and was known as a beacon of encouragement and inspiration.Adam is survived by his parents, Les and Phyllis, Bismarck; his aunts and uncles, Don (Margaret) Schumacher, Bob (Shirley) Schumacher, Tim (Debby) Schumacher, all of Bismarck, Terry (Sandra) Schumacher, Reno, NV, Janet (Greg) Monson, Williston, Marjorie Arnold, Minot, and Phil (LaVae) Haaland, Devils Lake; and numerous cousins.He was preceded in death by his brother, Christopher; his grandparents, Adam and Anna Schumacher and Agnes and Ed Haaland; and his uncles, Donovan Arnold and Don Haaland.Memorials may be given to the American Melanoma Foundation, AMF, 4150 Regents Park Row, Suite 300, La Jolla, CA 92037.
