Betty (Elizabeth Ann Meyer) Haas, was born on the family farm near Timber Lake, SD, to Peter and Hilda (Boschker) Meyer June 6, 1933. The winter of 1942 they moved to the ranch near Pollock, SD. Betty attended the one-room school house down the road where her mother taught. She talked frequently of growing up on the ranch and the hard work it took. One of her best memories were the many hours she spent riding her horse, Silver, through the buttes checking on the cattle. Betty started her teaching career very early in a one room school near the river bottoms as teachers were in very short supply. She attended Concordia College and completed her studies at the State and Normal Industrial Teacher's College in Ellendale where she was Homecoming queen and met her future husband, Al. They both taught in Edgeley, ND, after graduating and were married on June 6, 1956, in Pollock, SD. She taught pre-school in their home in Aberdeen, S.D. before moving to Bismarck .Because of her great passion for teaching, she was privileged to be part of Shiloh Christian School, the first day they opened their doors, as their kindergarten teacher and later became their secretary/ bookkeeper for many years before retiring. Betty also taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and led many Bible Studies and prayer groups. She very much enjoyed hosting guests in their home including missionaries from overseas, groups from church and having friends over for tea. The most important aspect of her life was her relationship with the Lord and prayer. She started and continued through each day covering herself, her family and those around her in prayer. Every time we said "good-bye” she said, "You pray for us and we'll pray for you". Very thankful to have shared her life are her children: Mike (Shelley) Haas, Bismarck, their children: Kristen (Kurtis) Countess, Rachel and Rebecca; Tim (Rhonda) Haas, Johnson City, TN, their children: Nick and Tianna; and Susan (Don) Kleinsasser, Menoken, ND, their children: Alex and Jessica; Two great-granddaughters: Trinity Haas and Kaitlyn Countess; her brother, Harvey (JoAnn) Meyer, Pollock, SD, nephews: Brad and Justin, and niece: Gwen, and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al, earlier this year, her mother, father and a brother in infancy.
