Al was born on his parent’s farm near Flasher, ND on February 10, 1926.  He went to rural school there until the family moved to Mandan following the Great Depression of the 30’s.  He graduated from Mandan High School and entered the US Army in 1944 during World War II.  He was an ambulance driver in the Army and served in Germany, France, Philippines and lastly in occupied Japan. When the war ended, he returned home to Mandan.  He worked on the Garrison Dam project where he met the love of his life, Lila Peterson. They were married February 5, 1948 in Mandan. Al worked for several engineering companies until he was offered a career at the ND State Transportation Department as a draftsman. He retired after 30 years of service to the State of North Dakota.  He moved to Huff, ND on a rural property in 1992. It is there where he took up his true passion of gardening. He had flower beds that were the talk of the town, he planted fruit trees everywhere, and kept his property and the church grounds mowed to perfection.

Al will be forever loved and missed by his children, Patricia Frank, Linton,  Gregory Staudinger, Mandan, Teresa Weinhandl, Solen, Jeannette Schwindt and husband James, Mandan; grandchildren, Jada Antonini and husband Joey, Jared Frank, Ian Staudinger, and Devin Schwindt and fiancé Sydney Munns; great-grandchildren, Belle and husband Marshal Bolte, and Tristan Antonini; his sister, Kay Nygaard and brother-in-law, Dennis Peterson and his wife Joan, and many nieces and nephews.
