Anselm Ternes, 65, Mandan, passed away February 15, 2024, surrounded by family.
Mass of Christian burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 21 at Church of St. Joseph, 108 Third St NE, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A rosary/vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Burial will be held at Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan.
Anselm was born December 22, 1958 to Lenus and Edna (Metcalf) Ternes. He was raised in Flasher, helping with the family business, Ternes & Sons Construction. He moved to Mandan his senior year of high school and graduated with the Class of ’77. In 1985 a partnership was formed with three of his brothers, Ternes Construction. With their hard work, they succeeded in turning their family business into a reputable construction company. He traveled in and out of town throughout his career, leaving a mark on many communities.
After a fulfilling career in construction, Anselm transitioned to a new chapter of his career in 2008, joining Bismarck State College as an Assistant Carpentry Instructor until his retirement in 2020. He took pride in his work and was meticulous. He was well respected and shaped many students lives for the better. Anselm was a knowledgeable resource for many people.
In 1986, Anselm married Marilyn Bosch at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. To this union, three sons were born, Nicholas, Slade, and Keenan. Together they shared many adventures and created memories that would last a lifetime. Marilyn was more than a spouse; she was Anselm's best friend and he was hers. Family was always a top priority. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in spoiling them with popcorn and surprises.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed building cars to participate in demolition derbies. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing, and camping. He taught his sons to be great outdoorsmen and the importance of spending time together. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with family at the lake cabin making memories.
Anselm found fulfillment in his involvement with various organizations. He was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks and Moose Club. Anselm was most proud of his time in the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Council #2760. In 2023, he received the honor of the North Dakota Knight of the Year, a testament to his dedication to serving others.
Those who knew him recognized him as a special man. He had a sunny disposition and kind nature. Being the role model he was, he always treated others with kindness, respect and would often brighten people’s day. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and truly left a lasting impact on those he met.
Anselm is survived by his wife, Marilyn, Mandan; son, Nicholas (Tara), and their children, Sidney and Sullivan, Mandan; son, Slade (Kayla), and their children, Abrietta and Declan, Beulah; son, Keenan (Erin) and their daughter, Maizey, Mandan; siblings, Victor, Jeanette (Ron) Parham, Jeffery, Deanna (LaVern) Miller, Brian (Julie), Brendan (Carol), Anita, and Art (Kay); brothers-in-law; Cletus Fuchs and Duane Martin; siblings-in-law, Betty Heidrich, Alfred (Karen) Bosch, Frank Bosch, Luiza (Toby) Schatz, and Ronald (Jenel) Bosch; mother-in-law, Rosina Bosch; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his Grandbaby; his parents, Edna and Lenus; siblings, Chris, Carol Martin, Marilyn Fuchs, and Kevin; father-in-law, Alfred Bosch; siblings-in-law, Glenn Bosch and Patrick Heidrich.
