Arnold Metzger

March 18, 1928 — March 12, 2024

Bismarck

Arnold "Arnie" Metzger passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024, with family by his side, at the age of 95. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 PM Tuesday, April 2 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Family will greet guests one hour prior.

Burial will be held at 3 PM Tuesday, April 2 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

He was born on March 18, 1928 in Glen Ullin, ND to John and Martha (Anhorn) Metzger. The family moved to Bismarck in 1944 and he graduated from Bismarck High School in 1946.

He enlisted in the US Army and served from 1946 to 1948 in Osaka, Japan in the 1st Cavalry Division. After he was discharged, he was very proud to get his private pilots license.

Arnie worked for Nash Finch for 12 years, followed by selling spices for McCormick Schilling until his retirement in 1990.

He married Florence Kahl in 1953, who passed away in 1974. In 1984 he married Levina Clemens and became an instant stepfather to two daughters and a wonderful grandfather to four grandchildren, with a fifth grandchild born in 1987. He also adored his nine great-grandchildren.

Arnie was a passionate golfer. He particularly enjoyed playing during the winters he and Levina spent in Mesa, Arizona. He took great pride in achieving a hole-in-one.

He was able to live on his own until he was 95! He spent the last year of his life at Haycreek Assisted Living where he was well-loved and entertained the staff and residents with his great sense of humor.

Arnie will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing he is reunited with Mom in heaven.

He is survived by his stepdaughters, Sharon (Jerry) Dowhy and Judy Pedersen; grandchildren, Eva (Leon) Hatzenbihler, Eric (Toni) Dowhy, Bethany Joseph, Robert (Nikki) Pedersen, and Kelli (Tyler) Oster; and great-grandchildren, Ian, Cole, and Anna Hatzenbihler, Stella Dowhy, Christian and Aliese Joseph, Brentley and Scarlett Pedersen, and Rylan Oster. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who all held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by both wives, Florence and Levina; his brothers, Bill, Jake, and Gottlieb; and sisters, Katie, Pauline, and Alvina.
