Mugaas
January 22, 1949 – May 11, 2026
Arvid Mugaas, 77, of Bismarck, passed away May 11, 2026.

Arvid was born January 22, 1949, to Norman Mugaas and Selina (Sylvia) Evanger Mugaas of Norma, ND. He attended country school in Rockford Township through eighth grade before graduating from Kenmare High School in 1967. He later graduated from the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for Minnesota Fish and Wildlife for several years before returning to the Kenmare area to help on the family farm, where he remained following his father’s death.
Arvid married Shiela Walhaug on October 23, 1977, at Faith Lutheran Church in Palermo, North Dakota. They farmed the homestead near Norma until moving to rural Sherwood in 1982, when they took over farming for Arvid’s uncle, Earling Mugaas.
He served on the Rockford Township and Prosperity Township boards and was baptized, confirmed, and a longtime member of Evanger Lutheran Church, where he also served as a trustee.
Arvid and Shiela moved to Bismarck in 2013 following his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2011. For more than a decade, Arvid worked incredibly hard at physical and speech therapy in order to remain active and continue spending meaningful time with the family and friends he loved so deeply. Arvid’s calm and gentle demeanor made him a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Shiela Mugaas; son Nathan (Annie) Mugaas and grandchildren Teddy, Stanley, and Ben; son Eric (Jill) Mugaas and grandchildren Peyton and Dylan; daughter Amy Mugaas; sister Ardis (Bob Butterfield) Fulton; brother Milo (Carole) Mugaas; and sister-in-law Marcia Walhaug.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Selina Mugaas; infant sister Carol Mugaas; brother-in-law Larry Fulton; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Terry and Bonnie Walhaug.
Memorials may be given to the donor’s charity of choice or to the Bismarck Parkinson’s Support Group, which was a tremendous source of support and encouragement for Arvid and Shiela.
