Barb was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 17, 1938. She was the youngest of four children and had a wonderful childhood. She and her best friend, Rozzie, used to take the city bus to Cleveland Indians baseball games at the age of ten. This was the start of a lifelong love of Baseball, cheering on the Minnesota Twins as well as her beloved Cleveland team and watching as many games as possible.”Barby” graduated from Berea High School in 1956. After high school she drove her red corvette convertible (a graduation gift from her father) to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Later, she moved to California where she started working for Western Airlines.
She came to Bismarck to visit her parents and met a shy engineer named Roger. After a whirlwind courtship, Roger flew his own plane to California to ask Barb to marry him. On November 18, 1961, they were married in Colorado during a blizzard. Barb and Roger moved to York Pennsylvania, where their first daughter Robin was born in 1963. Memphis, Tennessee was the next stop, where Lisa was born in 1965. They returned to Bismarck in 1968 to raise their family, and in 1974 Mike was born. They were married for 42 wonderful years, before Roger passed away in 2003, way too soon.
Barb was an accomplished secretary and held various jobs throughout her life, including medical transcription and a stint at the North Dakota Racing Commission. Her greatest achievement and claim to fame was working as the Desk Reporter for the North Dakota State Legislature for many sessions with her good friends Roy and Jerry. She even went to Micronesia in 1984 to work as a desk reporter for their legislative session.
Barb enjoyed watching her kids, grand and great-grand kids’ many activities. Basketball and soccer were her favorites, (Hockey was just too cold). She was their biggest cheerleader, a throwback to her high school days. She loved any card game; Bridge and Pinochle were her favorites. In her later years, playing cards at the Eagles, Amvets, Elks and the senior center kept her going and going and going. Barb also loved playing bingo and trips to the casino, especially when her family joined her. Her other great love was her dogs; from her high school cocker spaniel, to Sandy, Gus, Flower, Max, Buddy, Brandy, Mary Jane and Littlebit, she couldn’t get enough and always wanted one more.
Barb is survived by her three children and their families: The Jossart Family - Daughter Robin (Brad), granddaughter Brittany (Jordan) Wilhelm and great- grandsons Landry and Tatum, granddaughter Erika (Garret) Jacobs and great-grandson Brekken and great-granddaughter Karsyn, granddaughter Jordyn (Collin) Larson, and great-granddaughter Maddyn. The Kato Family - Daughter, Lisa (Steve), grandson Vince (Gabi) and granddaughter Jamie. The Middaugh Family - Mike (Tracy), granddaughter Chesney (Josh) and great-grandson Damien, granddaughter Hannah (Colton) Swartz, granddaughter Kennedy (Brian) and grandson Shawn(Madi).
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Roger, her parents, Fred and Elinor Scadding, brothers Fred and Tommy, and her sister Judy.
In honor of Barb’s Celebration of Life, we are encouraging everyone to wear Blue which was her favorite color. Please join us for snacks and stories after the service.
