Bernice Catherine Carlson

March 16, 1935 — May 27, 2025

Bernice Catherine Carlson age 90, Bismarck and formerly of Devils Lake and Rolla/Rock Lake, died on May 27, 2025, and went home to be with her Lord. 

Bernice was born on March 16, 1935, to Mike and Olga Jasper in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved with her family to the Abrahamson farmstead in the Turtle Mountains in rural North Dakota. She graduated from Rolla High School and from Minot College with a rural teaching degree. She married Howard Carlson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Rolla, N.D. on March 17, 1954. Bernice and Howard raised their family and enjoyed farming in Towner and Rolette counties for many years. She taught school and enjoyed being a substitute teacher. She was involved in the Rural Electric Women’s Association. She and her craft club friends made many little gifts for the Park View Assisted Living residents in Rolla. Bernice and Howard and family attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Rolla, and she served in various ways in the church. Her faith in her Lord was of foremost importance in her life, and she shared that faith openly with family, friends and all she encountered. Bernice enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, and time at their Metigoshe cabin, most of all visiting with her family. She and Howard moved to Park View Assisted Living, Rolla and then they moved to Eventide Assisted Living, Devils Lake in 2018. Bernice remained there after Howard’s death on October 11, 2018, until she transitioned to Edgewood Village in Bismarck the Fall of 2022.

Bernice is survived by her sons Bruce (Cindy) Carlson, James (Nancy) Carlson, David (Brenda) Carlson, Daryld (Peggy) Carlson, and Scott (Tami) Carlson. Grandchildren Shawn Carlson, Eric (Kari) Carlson, Katie (Matt) Hagen, Jayme Carlson, Jenna (Kris) Donovan, Brady (Brenna) Carlson, Brock (Nina) Carlson, Casey (Stacie) Carlson, Heather (Michael) McAtee, Emma (Garrett) Teel, McKenzie Carlson, Jacob and Joeseph Carlson, and 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, siblings Marion Hyde, Ralph Jasper, Harold Jasper and sisters-in-law Beverly Jasper, Hilda Jasper and Faye Juntunen and brother-in-law Don Hyde. She is survived by sister Carol (Dave) Ross.

A Celebration of Life reception will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, May 31st at Edgewood Village, Bismarck. Following there will be a private immediate family only memorial service. Interment will be at a later date at Mount View Cemetery near her home farmstead.

Family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the caring staff at Edgewood Village, CaringEdge Home Health Care for aiding Bernice during treatments and recovery, and CHI Hospice who supported her at end of life. Family will be forever grateful for the love and support Bernice has been given since her transition to Bismarck by her healthcare teams. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to the Bismarck Cancer Center.
