Carol was born on May 15th, 1938 in St. Cloud, MN to Sidney & Henrietta Schermer. In 1952 Sid & Etta moved the family to Morristown, SD. Carol graduated from McIntosh, SD High School and then attended the National School of Business in Rapid City, SD.

On July 15th, 1958 Carol married the love of her life Francis (Buck) Maher at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Buffalo, SD by Father Don Murray who Buck lived with for three years while going to High School in Buffalo. They moved to the Red Williamson Sheep Ranch at Watauga, SD where Buck was employed. Carol worked part time at the Morristown State Bank in Morristown, SD. In 1961, they moved into Morristown and owned & operated their small café, Mahers Chat & Chew and Carol continued to work at the bank. In 1962 they moved to Menoken, ND to work for the Clem Casey Ranch which they purchased in 1990. They resided there until they moved to Edgewood Assisted Living in May of 2023 where she passed away peacefully with Buck by her side.

Carol was a very social person and belonged to many organizations including 42 years with Menoken Homemakers, 30 years with Cow-Bells-Cattle Women where she served as President of District 5. She was a member of St. Hildegard Church in Menoken, the Alter Society and was the Church secretary for four years. She also was very involved in starting R-Calf USA and I-Band cattle organizations. She loved family reunions and in 1990 hosted a two day Maher Reunion with 325 Maher relatives in attendance.

She was usually one of the best dressed women in the room with everything always matching from head to toe and was known as the best cook for her big spreads of delicious food for working cattle and brandings. She dearly loved her granddaughter Lynsey and great-grandson Mason. Mason could always put a big smile on her face.

We are thankful for the caretakers at Edgewood, St. Vincent’s and Caring Edge Hospice for all the wonderful care they provided her during her last months.

She is survived by her husband and best friend, Francis (Buck) Maher; daughter Cindy Maher of Lake Geneva, WI; son, Gary (Belinda) Maher of Menoken, ND; granddaughter, Lynsey Maher & great-grandson, Mason, Menoken, ND; brother, Nick (Jeanne) Schermer, Hayward, MN; sister, Nancy Sevely, Clear Lake, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Rose Fritz (Dave) Dirk, Mandan, ND, Chris Maher, Mission, TX; brothers-in-law, Paul (Claudette) Maher, Bismarck, ND, Jerome (Etta) Maher, Glendive, MT, Dan (Gloria) Maher, Morristown, SD; very special friend, Jane Haught, Bismarck, ND and many nieces and nephews.
