Carol J. Smith

Carol Jeanette (Veidt) Smith, age 81, Bismarck, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 PM, Saturday, September 23, at the Stanton Civic Center, 751 Lyon St, Stanton, followed by a lunch.

She was born in Hazen on April 22, 1942, to Mathilda (Tillie) Holwagner and Edward Veidt. Carol graduated from Stanton High School as an Honor student. She delivered the address and farewell speech at the graduation ceremony.

During her high school and early years, Carol was the business manager for the Annual and Newspaper Staff and was a member of the school choir. She traveled with a group of young ladies who sang at funerals and special events in Stanton and other surrounding communities.

She married James C. Smith, of Stanton, on September 8, 1962. Carol and JC had two children, Lyle James and Jill Carol. In the years to come, they moved to many communities for work and finally settled in Golden Valley in 1975.

While in Golden Valley, she was a member of the Women’s Club, Whist club, and worked at various businesses. Her favorite place was the floral shop in Beulah. She continued making floral arrangements for weddings and proms for family and friends after she left Golden Valley.

In 1994, Carol moved to Bismarck and worked at various places including Stamart and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. She also truly enjoyed working at many legislative sessions.

Carol retired in 2007 and continued to stay busy driving all over the state in her little Sunfire. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her special friend, Jim Killingbeck.

Carol is survived by her two children, Lyle (Shary) Smith and Jill (Les) Bergquist, four grandchildren, Shawn (Kelly) Smith, Jimmy (Andi) Smith, Jocelyn (Shane) Bergquist, Taylor Bergquist, one great-granddaughter Abigael Smith, siblings Veronica, Esther (Terry), Paul, Sheila, Stacey and Cindy, brother-in-law Jeff, many nieces and nephews and her very special friend Jim Killingbeck.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents Tillie and Edward, stepfather Paulus, siblings Diana, Steven, Colleen and Craig and brother-in-law Ronnie.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family asks that you donate to Alzheimer’s research in Carol’s honor.
