It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Croix José Clooten, affectionately known as “Croix Boy,” whose life was tragically cut short on July 27, 2026, at the age of 22 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Born on July 22, 2004 in Bismarck, Croix spent his entire life in the community he proudly called home. Raised and educated in Bismarck, he graduated from Legacy High School and was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering love for those around him. Those fortunate enough to know Croix will forever remember his big, beautiful smile, his laugh, and the way his presence could light up any room. Croix found joy in life's simple adventures. He loved riding four-wheelers and side-by-sides through the Desert, spending countless hours on the Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea riding jet skis and making memories with family and friends, building LEGO sets, gaming, and spending time outdoors. Above all, Croix felt a deep sense of responsibility for the people he held close to his heart.

He was an amazing little brother who shared his love of gaming and skateboarding with his older brother, Cade. Whether they were outside as Cade taught him how to skate or staying up late trying to conquer the next level of a game, they always had fun together—and their excited screams could often be heard all the way upstairs. Croix was later blessed with two younger brothers, Crue and Cort, and became a big brother himself—a role he did not take lightly. He loved building LEGO sets and making crafts with them, teaching them how to ride their bikes, and showing them how to use whatever new toy he got them. His greatest happiness came from being with his brothers and the people he loved most.

Croix was also a deeply loyal friend. He helped those close to him through life’s challenges, offering encouragement, support, and a shoulder to lean on when they needed it most. His kind heart extended beyond people, as he had a deep love for animals and dreamed of one day working with animals.

He had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. Croix was generous with everything he had. He was an incredibly thoughtful gift-giver—often surprising people for no reason at all—and never hesitated to put the needs of others before his own. Those who knew Croix will remember him as kind, passionate, loving, protective, and incredibly generous. His compassion, loyalty, and genuine heart touched countless lives, leaving memories that will be cherished forever.

Croix is survived by his loving parents: father, John (Heidi Ripplinger) Clooten, mother, Dawn Leingang; his beloved brothers, Cade (Alyencia) Clooten, Crue Clooten, and Cort Clooten; his grandparents, Tom and Debbie Clooten, Kathy Leingang, and Jim and Bonnie Ripplinger; his aunts and uncles, Jesse Clooten, Lacey (Ken) Nelson, Kelsey (Joel) Boxrud, McKenzie (Ben) Bercier, Stephanie Clooten, Richard (Marcia) Leingang, Leonard (Michelle) Leingang, Curt (Paulette) Leingang, Preston (Karley) Ripplinger, Brian Peterson; his cousins, Jaxon, Harbor, Stark, Sloane, Payton, Caleb, Nathan, Briggs, Hartley, Jace, Kennalei, Rhilyn, Samantha (Blake), Tyler (Kaitlyn), Jacob (Katie), McKayla (Austin), Ricky, Jack, Emery, William, Grace, Anna, Justin, and Mary; his closest friends, Ben, Jaeden, and Heaven, along with many extended family members, cherished friends, and all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Leonard Leingang; great-grandmother, Marge Jones; great-parents, Leo and Evelyn Clooten; great-uncles, Gene Clooten and Glen Clooten; aunts, Theresa Leingang and Holly Peterson; and other loved ones who welcomed him into eternal peace.

A public visitation will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by a Prayer Vigil at 4:00 p.m., at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E. Century Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58503.

A Funeral Service celebrating Croix's life will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Evangel Church, 3225 N. 14th Street, Bismarck, ND 58503.

Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 2929 E. Century Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58503. Following the burial, family and friends are invited to return to Evangel Church for a luncheon and a time of fellowship.

Flowers are welcome. In honor of Croix's generous spirit and lifelong love of animals, the family invites those wishing to honor his memory to make a donation to a local animal shelter or rescue organization of their choice. Those attending the visitation are also encouraged to bring a new dog or cat toy to be donated to Furry Friends Rockin' Rescue & Kitty City. Through these simple acts of kindness, Croix's compassion and love for animals will continue to make a difference.

Croix's life was taken far too soon by an act of violence that forever changed the lives of everyone who loved him. Our family hopes his story serves as a reminder to choose compassion over hatred, peace over violence, and love over anger. If his legacy inspires even one person to make a different choice, then his light will continue to shine in this world.

Though Croix’s time with us was far too short, the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the memories he created will remain in our hearts forever.
