Dale Coleman

September 24, 1933 — October 31, 2025

“Our dad, Dale Coleman, passed away on Halloween and received a double treat when he was welcomed in Heaven by our mom and given a new set of legs!”

Dale Coleman, 92, of Baldwin, ND, passed away on October 31, 2025. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife in the Baldwin Cemetery, located across the road from the farm they built and shared for 62 years. This land, which he cultivated by hand, served as the pasture where he raised sheep and hunted ducks with his father during his childhood. It has been a significant part of his life for over 90 years. Dale moved from a farm in Regan at the age of 2 to Baldwin, and he will rest in the land that has been deeply rooted in his life. His presence will continue to be felt by both current and future generations, as his legacy lives on through the DJ Coleman farm and ranch.

Dale was born on September 24, 1933, to Walter and Elsa (Meyer) Coleman. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1951 and attended two winter quarters at North Dakota State University before returning home to help on the family farm.

Dale drove a red and white '56 Chevy, which caught the attention of his future wife and dance partner, Jean. They married on September 21, 1958, and spent the next 62 years raising a family while farming and ranching a third-generation family farm in Baldwin. He took great pride in the fact that his sons became the fourth generation and his grandsons the fifth generation to continue the family legacy.

In addition to farming and ranching, Dale loved music. He played the piano and accordion, and in his early years, performed in bands for many dances. On Sunday mornings, he would sit at the piano and play while waiting for his family to get ready for Church. His favorite music was waltzes, polkas, and big band music. He often recounted how he and Jean danced to Guy Lombardo on their honeymoon in Rapid City and enjoyed visits to the Crystal Ballroom and Jerry's Supper Club in Bismarck. In addition to music, Dale also loved trains. He often remarked that had he not chosen farming, he would have pursued a career as a train engineer.

Dale served as president of the Burleigh County chapter of the North Dakota Farm Bureau, was a member of Toastmasters, and, for 17 years, was a leader of the Crofte Clan 4-H Club. He was a founding member of Zion Lutheran Church and actively participated in the congregation. Throughout Burleigh County, he served on various boards and helped organize reunions for the Bismarck High School Class of 1951. Although he was a proud graduate of Bismarck High School, he became a Patriot fan and was the first chairman of the Century High School Booster Club.

Known for driving his blue Tahoe and sipping McDonald’s coffee, his family and friends always knew where to find him!

Dale's greatest pride and joy were his family and their accomplishments. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with and watching his children and grandchildren at their sporting and musical events, always being one of their biggest supporters. In his later years, he cherished visits with his great-grandchildren. He loved telling stories, making jokes, and maintaining his great sense of humor right up until his last moments. Everyone who encountered Dale spoke highly of him and appreciated the wonderful qualities he embodied. He was a favorite among all those who assisted in his care.

Dale is survived by his sons Curt (Sue) Coleman and Clark (Sara) Coleman; daughters Corene (Jim) Purintun and Connie (Erik) Stordalen; nine grandchildren, Justin (Nicole) Purintun, Tanner (Rikki) Purintun, Jonathon (Cassidy) Purintun, Chloe (Andrew) Carlson, Cooper (Karlee) Coleman, Clint (McKenzie) Coleman, and Konnor, Samantha, and MeKayla Stordalen; and eight great-grandchildren, Grayson, Collins, and Alyvia Purintun, Jovi, Remi, and Ledger Purintun, Jalen Purintun, Elle Carlson and two expected in December. He is also survived by his brother Marlen Coleman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elsa Coleman, and his wife, Jean Coleman.
