Daniel was born on September 9, 1977, in Bismarck, ND to James and Sara Balcom – the second child, with an older sister, Jessi. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1996. In 2016, Daniel had a beautiful son, Jacob, who was and continued to be the source of his greatest joy and pride.
Daniel worked many jobs in the food service industry. His bright smile and welcoming personality made him a natural bartender and server. He got his start at the Jade Garden as a line cook when he was in high school, working next to his good friends Karl and Eric. He also waited tables at the family-owned Peacock Alley with all his cousins. The last couple years he worked as a waiter at The Walrus with some good friends who he loved.
Some of Daniel’s proudest moments came while being at Hope Manor Sober Living Home. He lived in Hope Manor from June 2020 to April 2022. During his time there he went from resident to trusted senior member to volunteer resident manager. His love for people, his hunger for recovery at the time, and his heart of service showed that he was a natural leader.
Daniel was a very talented artist. Not only could he draw and paint wonderful, magical things, he was also a beautiful writer who could put his feelings into words. He was a performer – a self-taught juggler. He loved bikes, music, photography, plants, rocks, bugs, cats, fish, weird T-shirts, stickers – not necessarily in that order. Daniel’s greatest love was his son, Jacob. He truly enjoyed people and being with others. He had the unique ability to see the beauty in all people and everyone around him could feel it. Everyone always hoped to see Daniel wherever they went. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
Daniel is survived by his son, Jacob Ernesto Balcom; father, James (Sue) Balcom; mother, Sara Balcom; sister, Jessica (John) Heidrich; stepsister, Claire (Jason) Barnhard; stepbrother, Adam (Kelsey) Bartholomew; nieces and nephews, Daniel James Balcom, Elle Waldoch, Audenia Barnhard, Lucy, Oliver, and Finley Bartholomew.
Daniel is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary Agnes and Curtiss Balcom and Mary and Robert Hixson; cousin, Lisa Moltzen.
