Daniel was born to Theobold and Lundina (Schlickenmayer) Mittleider on April 22, 1946 on a farm five miles south of Tappen. He attended rural school and Tappen High School.

He met his future wife, Mary Stoppleworth, in 1961 and they were united in marriage at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Pingree, N.D., on Aug. 28, 1965. They had three children, LaDonna, Danny and LaVonne.

He worked various jobs but construction was his calling, working for Construction Associates (while starting his own part time business in 1978), Coffell's, Northern Improvement, US Postal Service, running maintainer for Kidder County and Swanberg Construction until he retired from road construction in 2011. Upon retiring he worked full time for their business, D & M Excavating until his death. He took pride in having a job well done.

Daniel was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Club. Daniel enjoyed working his construction business, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved fishing and enjoyed his fishing trips to Lake of the Woods with his buddies, joking around, pulling pranks and giving people a hard time. He will be remembered by his handshake and shoulder squeeze. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Daniel is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary; daughter, LaDonna (Donald) Rohrbach, Wishek; son, Dan Jr. (LaVonne) Mittleider, Tappen; and daughter, LaVonne (Donnie) Stockert, Steele;  grandchildren, Danielle and Robert Hackman, Philip (Alyssa) Mittleider, Jared (Kallie) Mittleider, Lynnsey Mittleider and Reese Nelson; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Norma Morlock, Mike Mittleider and Chris Mittleider; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Daniel was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Dale Hackman; his parents; four brothers and one sister.
