Bismarck

David Jerome Hummel, 83, passed away December 4, 2023, in Bismarck, ND.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, Dec. 16, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.

Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, Dec. 18, at The North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Dave was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, on June 17, 1940.  Son of Matthew and Bertha (Koch) Hummel.  He graduated from St. Mary’s Central High School in 1958.  He attended college and served in the North Dakota Army National Guard.  He married Delores Seiler at St. Anne Church, in Bismarck, on November 28, 1970.

He began his career in sales, where he sold sporting goods, furniture and cars.  He then found his way into the travel industry, where he worked for multiple companies and eventually started his own company with a partner.  After closing the office in the travel industry, he had a long tenure with AAction Movers and held multiple management positions before he retired.

He was a gifted athlete, loved to compete and excelled in baseball, football, basketball and track.  He has been inducted into the following Hall of Fames – St. Mary’s Central High School - Athletics 2010, North Dakota Amateur Basketball 2004, North Dakota Softball 1980 and Mayville State University – Football Team 1961 & Basketball Team 1962.  He will be inducted into the Bismarck State College – Athletic Hall of Fame in May 2024.  His family will accept this honor on his behalf.

His true passion was baseball and at the age of 19, he played in a local exhibition game against the Havana Cuban Stars.  The legendary Satchel Paige was pitching against the local talent that day and thousands were in attendance.  He grew up on stories about the 52 year old great, from his father, and he was excited to face him on the mound.  He took some ‘chin music’ on the first pitch and then hit his famous ‘hesitation pitch’ to right center field, for a stand-up triple and it was clear that the legend wasn’t happy about it.  After a long stare towards third base, the great went on with his business, as history was being made for Bismarck baseball.

He enjoyed attending sporting events, cheering on the local teams, Minnesota Twins and Vikings.  You could also find Dave on the golf course, traveling and spending time with family and friends, and trying his luck at the casino.  He was easy to talk to and loved sharing stories and laughter.  His sons, Chad and Scott, and grandchildren, Avery and Ella, were his pride and joy.

He is survived by his sons, Chad Hummel, Bloomington, MN, Scott and Tara Hummel, Highlands Ranch, CO; grandchildren, Avery and Ella Hummel; brother Ted Hummel, Spearfish, SD and several nieces, nephews and cousins, who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores (Seiler) Hummel, parents, Matthew and Bertha (Koch) Hummel; brother, Duane and sister, Diana Schempp.
