David Torbert, 70, passed away on July 19, 2025, in Bismarck, North Dakota following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born on September 13, 1954, in Fairbanks, Alaska, David dedicated his life to education and music, leaving a lasting impact on the communities he served.

David began his professional journey as a high school band director in Wessington and Clark, South Dakota. He spent most of his teaching career in Jamestown, North Dakota. Under his leadership and direction, the band achieved notable recognition by performing in prestigious national events such as the Rose Bowl Parade and the Orange Bowl Parade-milestones that reflected both his passion for music and his commitment to excellence in student performance.

Later in his career, David transitioned into educational administration and served as an elementary principal in Sterling, North Dakota. In this role, he continued to shape young lives with the same dedication and care that defined his years as a music educator.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Torbert; his son, James Torbert (Jessica); his daughter, Jessica Hansen (Gary); and his cherished grandchildren, Gabe Torbert, Isaac Torbert, Makayla Torbert, Addison Torbert, Alayna Hansen and Brynlee Hansen. He is also survived by his sisters, Dawn Peanasky (Paul), and Debbie Anderson (Ted). He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eileen Torbert.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

David’s legacy lives on through the many students he inspired over the years and the family who loved him dearly. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
