Diansyia “Diane”
Volk
August 19, 1942 – April 26, 2026
Diansyia “Diane” A. Volk, 83, passed away April 26, 2026.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, with a visitation starting one hour prior.
Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Diansyia A. Volk was born on August 19, 1942, in Hague, ND, to Joseph and Christina (Kessler) Grosz. She was the 13th of 14 children. Diane attended school in Hague and graduated from Hague High School in 1961.
Diane married Daniel Volk on March 20, 1962, at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Pierre, SD. In 1963, they moved to Linton, ND, and in 1966, Dan and Diane began their family.
In 1966, Diane also started her career at the Linton Hospital and Linton Medical Center. She worked as a CNA, in central supply, as a ward clerk, as an operating room surgical scrub tech, and served as an ambulance volunteer. In the 1990s, she earned her EMT and EMTI certifications, regularly taking on-call shifts for the ambulance service. She later attended classes at NDSCS, graduating in 1997 with her Associate Degree in Nursing—during one of the snowiest winters on record. In 1977, she transferred to the Linton Medical Center as a medical assistant. In 2003, she became the director of the Linton Medical Center and the Hazelton Clinic, a position she held until her retirement in August 2009.
On April 9, 2007, Daniel passed away after a short battle with cancer, a loss Diane carried with grace and strength.
In March 2003, a spring flood ravaged the city of Linton and the surrounding areas, causing significant damage to her home as well. In May 2011, Diane moved to Bismarck to be closer to her children, and she remained there until November 2024, when she entered Assisted Living at Edgewood Mandan.
Diane had a lifelong love of antiques, especially refinishing pieces while preserving their original beauty and character. She enjoyed attending auction sales, often driving to sales throughout the county or in neighboring communities. She was usually accompanied by Dan or one of her children, confidently outbidding other buyers to bring home the best pieces. Many of her antiques have been passed down to her children and grandchildren.
Diane also developed a love for the piano as an adult. With the help of her sister, Theresa, she was able to acquire a piano and began both self-taught and private lessons to improve her skills.
Diane was an amazing cook and baker, specializing in the German-Russian recipes she grew up with. She loved preparing her signature dishes—including Borscht Soup, Kuchen, Kneophle, Ketchup Meat, and of course, Red-Eye—for family gatherings and holidays. She passed many of these recipes down to her children and their families, who continue to make them today.
After a brief illness, Diane peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, April 26, 2026, with her family by her side.
Diane is survived by her three children: Dean (Tammy) Volk, Doug (Tammy Brown) Volk, and Tori (Henry) Ohlhauser; six grandchildren: Sean (Selena) Oberlander, Emili (Brandon) Buechler, Madison (Alex) Hoff, Isaac Ohlhauser, Erin (Brady) Olson, Linzee Volk and special friend, Cole Jore, and Samantha Volk; and four great-grandchildren: Axel, Rhett, Brogan, and Briggs. She is also survived by her brother, Aloys (Betty) Grosz; sisters-in-law, Agnes Grosz, Judy (Jim) Eberle, and Jane (Bob) Hagel; and brother-in-law, Roger (Mary) Volk.
Diane was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; her parents, Joseph and Christina Grosz; mother and father-in-law, Engelbert and Josephine Volk, nine sisters: Elizabeth Chesky, Maggie Weinzirl, Theresa Dietz, Gladys Dyson, Eva Opheim, Cecelia Engelhaupt, Josie Holder, Mary Ford, and Jenny Hahne; and three brothers: Leo, Benny, and Frank Grosz.
