Obituary

Diordan Thayne “Sandy” McLean, age 93, of Bismarck, ND, passed away in hospice care on January 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of family.

A funeral service will start at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, January 29, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, on Wednesday, January 28, at Parkway Funeral Service, with a visitation continuing one hour prior to the service.

Sandy was born on November 8, 1932, in Bismarck, ND. He grew up and attended schools in Menoken, ND and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1950. He married his beautiful wife Barbara A. (Nelson) McLean on February 13, 1954, and they started their family soon thereafter. Sandy worked in autobody repair most of his life, and eventually retired at age 83. Sandy enjoyed his retirement traveling, spending time with family and church friends, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his deeply beloved wife, Barbara McLean; his parents, Donald McLean, Lila McLean, and Janet McLean; his brothers, Bradley McLean and Lyle McLean; his son-in-law, Joseph Schumacher; and three infant great-granddaughters.

Sandy is survived by his children: Susan Crocker, Twila Schumacher, Michael McLean (Lisa), Cindy Bowles (Charles), Corrine Zerr (Dale), and Marie Smith (Pat). He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren: Jeremy Kringstad, Sacha Hoffman, William Crocker (Jolene), Shane Walter, Jessica McLean, Mikaila McLean, Troy Weist (Liz), Justin Link (Elizabeth), Chad Link (Shirley), Kayleigh Zerr (Anton), Kristin Zerr (Tyler), Kendra Zerr, Karmen Zerr (Ryan), Benjamin Smith, and Joseph Smith (Seshel). He was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by his siblings: Daniel McLean (Sue), Margaret Taskila, Mary Howell (Bruce), Colleen Richter, and Virginia Vedvick (Bob), along with many treasured cousins and extended family members.

A passionate gardener, Sandy was well known for his demonstration gardens, particularly his lilies, iris, and roses. He enjoyed bird and squirrel watching, traveling to see his extended family across the United States, and attending family reunions. Sandy was a storyteller, jokester, and loved by everyone who met him and spent time with him. His warmth, humor, and love of family left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
