Obituary

Donald DuWayne Mund, 87, Bismarck, passed away on September 11, 2026. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 17 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior. A livestream of the service will be available below.

Burial will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

He was born in Carson, ND on October 2, 1938. He enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation from Leith High School. (He was voted class president . . . by the four girls in his graduating class.) He served four years primarily aboard the USS Coral Sea. He was a proud Navy veteran and will be buried with full military honors.

After his military service, he met the love of his life, Virginia, in Des Moines, Iowa. They were married for 63 years and raised two daughters. Don graduated from BJC and UND with a degree in accounting. He became an avid “Fighting Sioux” fan while attending UND. He worked for the State of ND for many years, with his last position being the Director of Facility Management/OMB.

He chose to retire early, so he could spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and had fun teasing his family (He convinced Morgan she was related to Miss America, Cara Mund.) He enjoyed all sports, collecting items (ie: ball caps, belt buckles, coins, and golf/tennis balls which he collected on walks), and watching cowboy movies and polka party. His “happy place” was the farm near Regan, ND, with his collection of classic cars and tractors.

Don is survived by his wife, Virginia Mund (Moore); children, Bobbie Houn and Becky Huyge (Stan); grandchildren DuWayne Houn (Megan), Lee Youngs (Derik), Matthew Huyge, and Mason Huyge (Suzy); great-grandchildren, Morgan Houn and Luna Youngs; and siblings Alberta Arnold and Ervin Mund.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edna Mund; siblings Leonard, Lulu, Arnold, Janice, Harold, and Stanley; and his granddaughter Megan Huyge.

It would mean the world to Don if memorial gifts were given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to share his love for all children or to the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery to honor those who have served our country.
