Donald was born on October 24, 1943, in Logan County, North Dakota, to Peter P. and Rose (Sperle) Schumacher. Donald completed his education through the eighth grade at a country school and subsequently graduated from Napoleon High School in 1962. He furthered his academic pursuits at North Dakota State University (NDSU), graduating with a degree in agriculture. Following his graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army on May 3, 1967, and honorably served a tour in the Vietnam War until his discharge on February 26, 1969. On September 16, 1967, Donald married Magdalen “Maggie” Wangler at St. Boniface Church in rural Kintyre, North Dakota. Together, they cultivated a life on the family farm, where they raised small grains and livestock, and welcomed three children: Monte, Twila, and Eric. After the untimely passing of his beloved wife Maggie in 1993, Donald continued to manage the farm until 2000. He then found companionship with Phyllus Nygaard for over 30 years, and she remained by his side until his passing. Donald was actively involved in his community, holding a leadership position in the American Legion and being a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, particularly Pinochle, with friends and neighbors, teaching adult veteran agriculture classes, and sharing his knowledge by substitute teaching. He also cherished his time engaging in crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Donald is survived by his son Monte (Jane) Schumacher, daughter Twila Johnson (Dean Sommerfeld), and son Eric (Jessica) Schumacher; grandchildren Tyler (Ciara) Johnson and great-grandchildren Landry, Rafe, Scout, and Beau; Trevor (Kristy) Johnson and great-grandchildren Harlowe, Beckett, Burke, and Rowan; Toria (Dixon) Schwan; Ethan Schumacher; and Malachi Schumacher; his sister, Darlene (Andy) Weigel; sister-in-law Alice Tony) Schumacher; brother-in-law Larry (Diane) Wangler; and special companion Phyllus Nygaard.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Peter P. and Rose Schumacher; his wife, Maggie; brother, Tony (Alice); sisters-in-law Lucy (Kenneth) Berreth and Theresia (Joe) Sundsbak, and brothers-in-law Felix Wangler and Adam Wangler.
A special thank you to the staff of Missouri Slope and Sanford Hospice for their loving care of Donald. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
