Douglas L. Rittel, age 70, of Bismarck, ND, went home to Heaven on June 12, 2026.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Bismarck Community Church, 1617 Michigan Ave, Bismarck.

Douglas was born on July 5, 1955, in Bismarck to Arthur and Viola (Kaiser) Rittel. He was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1974. He continued his education at Bismarck Junior College, earning a certificate in Auto Body. During that time, he proudly served in the North Dakota Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant and receiving an honorable discharge in 1982.

On June 22, 1979, Doug was united in marriage to Bert (Hellwig) Mayher, and together they built their life in Bismarck.

Doug began his career at D&J Autobody before changing tracks to a long and dedicated 37-year career with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked as a Thermite Welding Foreman. He took great pride in his work and the role he played in keeping the railroad running.

Outside of work, Doug found joy in the simple things in life. He loved being outdoors—whether it was tending to his garden, keeping his lawn perfectly trimmed, or just enjoying a quiet day outside. He had a strong work ethic that carried over into everything he did, and he was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors, friends, or family without hesitation. Doug had a steady, dependable nature and a quiet sense of humor that those closest to him cherished. He wasn’t a man of many words, but when he spoke, it mattered—and his actions spoke even louder.

Doug especially treasured time spent with Bert and his family. Whether it was sharing a meal, working on a project, or simply being together, those moments meant the most to him. He showed his love through what he did—his presence, his reliability, and his willingness to always show up when needed.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Bert; his children, Jason (Corrie) Mayher and Jennifer (Kerry) Klesalek and his granddaughter, Haley Klesalek, all of Bismarck, ND. He is also survived by his brothers, Fredrick (Teresa) Rittel of Minot, ND, and David and James Rittel, both of Bismarck, ND, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doug held a special place in his heart for Chris, Aubree, and Shelby Rath, and Kayla Villa-Rath—they truly meant the world to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father- and mother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, Doug requested that memorials be directed to a charitable organization of your choice.
