Obituary

Duane Melvin Ahonen, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away at home surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on November 3, 1959, in Sandstone, Minnesota, to Melvin and Sharron Ahonen. He graduated from Minot High School, and a summer visit to Minnesota changed his life forever when he met the love of his life, Robin Magnuson. What started that summer became a beautiful journey together that would span 46 years of marriage.

A Celebration of Life will start at 11 a.m., on Monday, October 5, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, with visitation being held one hour prior to the service.

Duane and Robin were united in marriage on September 20, 1980. In 1983, Duane and Robin made their home in Bismarck, North Dakota, where they built a life filled with family, friendship, laughter, and countless memories. Together, they raised three children: Amanda, Nathan, and James. Their family was Duane’s greatest accomplishment and his greatest source of pride.

Duane dedicated more than 30 years of his working life to Cofell’s Plumbing and Excavating before retiring. While he took pride in his work, the people in his life and the time spent with them meant the most to him.

Duane had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and many of his favorite memories were made outside with family and friends.

He also had a gift for storytelling. If you had a few minutes—or, more likely, twenty—Duane was always happy to share a story, a drink, and a good laugh. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and he made friends everywhere he went. His presence made life a little brighter, and the memories he created with those around him will be cherished.

Above all else, Duane loved his family. He was incredibly proud of his children and treasured his grandchildren. His family includes his daughter Amanda and her wife, Cassie, and Amanda’s children, Connor and Ethan; his son Nathan and his wife, Jenna, and their daughter, Sydney; and his son James and his wife, Melissa, and their children, Easton and Aspen.

Duane’s greatest joy was watching his family grow and being part of their lives. He loved his grandchildren immensely and was endlessly proud of each of them.

Duane will be deeply missed by Robin, his children and their families, his extended family, and the many friends whose lives he touched. His stories, laughter, and love will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Duane is survived by his wife, Robin; his children, Amanda (Cassie), Nathan (Jenna), and James (Melissa); his five grandchildren; his sisters, Lynn and Diane; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Melvin; his mother, Sharron; his nephew, Derek; and several aunts and uncles.
