Ed was born December 9, 1931 in Bluegrass, ND, to Ella (Breimeier) and John Bickel.  He grew up northwest of New Salem and graduated from New Salem High School in 1950.

He attended Dickinson College and afterwards taught grades one through eight at Caribou country school.  He then joined the United States Air Force, serving in the Korean War.

On July 28, 1957, he married Lois Bornemann at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hannover, ND.  They were blessed with 54 years of marriage.

Ed was an avid antique collector, attending auctions as often as possible. Whether buying or selling, it was a passion for Ed and Lois throughout their marriage.

He also enjoyed traveling, having taken his family to all 50 states and abroad.  He loved to dance. Whether it was a polka or a two-step, he was the most popular guy on the floor.  Ed's other passion was hunting. He had many friends with many stories. He enjoyed all sports.  He and Lois attended high school state basketball tournaments every year. He was active in Veteran organizations and a proud member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Ed's greatest joy was time spent with family and friends, with the highlight being his grandson, Cody.  He cherished every moment that he and Cody spent together, whether it was gardening, going on vacations or just day-to-day activities. Ed will forever be missed by all who knew his kindness, wit and generosity.

Grateful to have shared his life are his son, John, Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter, Joan (fiancé, Trent), Bismarck; and grandson, Cody, Bismarck.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents, John and Ella Bickel; sister, Alice; and brother-in-law, Robert Mehrer.

Ed will be missed greatly by his family. He is forever in our hearts.
