Eleonore was born in Rastatt, a German colony in south Russia. She endured many hardships in life, including the death of younger, twin brothers at a very young age and witnessing firsthand the devastation caused by WWII. The memories and images would stay with her for the rest of her life.
At the age of 21, Eleonore and her oldest sister Emmy, immigrated to America and settled in the Bismarck area. Eleonore began working as an aide at St. Alexius Hospital, where she met George. Marriage soon followed and Eleonore began devoting her life to her husband and raising and nurturing their children.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents George and Anna Benz, her sisters, Emmy Berger and Magdalena Bucholz and her three brothers, Alex, Peter and Paul and her great grandsons, Michael and Benedict.
Eleonore is loved and cherished by her 10 surviving children and 22 grandchildren; Bernie (Tiffany), Arizona, and their 4 children, Scarlet, Eleonore, Grace and Alexander; George Jr, Bismarck, and his 3 children, Samantha (Travis) Culpepper; Kate (Max) Campion, and Christine (Justin) Pfeifer; Tony (Gina), Bismarck, and their 3 children, Sara (Ben Pattee), Eric (Cassidy) and David (Amber Lynn); Ed (Susan), Bismarck and their 4 children, Christopher (Stacy Pfeiffer) Lawson, Jeannette (Eric) Buetler, Adam (Samantha) and Dylan (Hannah); John, Minneapolis; Joe (Becky), Minneapolis, and their 2 children, Mathew and Samual; Lorraine, Bismarck and her 2 children, Nicholas and Ashley (Robbie) Slaughter; Barbara (Brian) Frohlich, Bismarck and their 4 children, Lauren (Ross) Young, Gabrielle (Noah) Adamitis, Benjamin, and Zoe (Patrick) Lemer; Monica, Bismarck; Peter, St. Paul.
Eleonore is also survived by 24 great grandchildren, Hendrix, Atlas, Stetson, Corrine, Arthur, Bennet, Trace, Kollyns Abe, Hadley, Piper, Mariah, Wade, Eden, Emeiry, Ellis, Everett, Theodore, Peter, Felix, Thomas, Genevieve, Berklee and Callum; along with one great-great grandson, Cody. Each of whom carries a part of her steadfast spirit.
She was a quietly, faithful woman. Eleonore with George, stressed to their family the importance of a strong faith.
Outside of family and a few close friends, she was a private individual. She was a champion of the underdog and firmly believed and expressed her belief that everyone deserved a second chance. She would often reference the story of the Tortoise and the Hare and remind us that it’s not the way you start, but how you finish.
Eleonore was a humble individual, who always downplayed compliments, as evident by her response when asked about many of the famous family recipes “it’s a simple yeast dough”. What makes this even more remarkable, was that her cooking was self-taught and she claimed that when she got married, she didn’t even know how to turn on the stove.
We will miss her strong will, her firm hand, and her unwavering love. Love, not in the traditional way of hugs or the daily “I Love you”, but rather but by her example. She showed her love, through her “family first” philosophy, her insistence on a college education and hard work, but always with the reminder, “never forget where you came from”.
While she is no longer of this world, her presence will forever live in our hearts. The lessons she taught us and the values she instilled in us will be our guide going forward.
