Ferdinand "Butch" Hagel

January 3, 1932 — May 20, 2024

Ferdinand “Butch” Hagel, 92, Dickinson, passed away May 20th 2024 at St. Luke’s in Dickinson. 

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31st  at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.

Burial will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. 

Ferdinand was born January 3, 1932 in Tappen, the Son of Adolf and Kathrina Hagel. He was raised and educated in the Tappen area, graduating from Tappen High School. Ferdinand went into the Army.

Ferdinand Hagel walked into the Dawson family grocery store “shoppin’ for a date.” Where he met the love of his life Doris and the two began dating before he joined the military. Following his discharge, the two were married June 5, 1955 in Dawson. They lived in Dickinson, Rugby, Jamestown, working at various jobs. Then moving to Riverdale taking a job at the Garrison Dam Power Plant where Ferdinand worked for 28 years and retired in 1994. After retiring, they sold their home in Pick City, and lived full time in their RV. They enjoyed camping and traveling. One summer, He and Doris were hosts in Yellowstone National Park. Later their travels brought them to Arizona where they settled for the winter months and spent the summers back in North Dakota seeing family and friends. 

Wood working was one of many hobbies dad had, He made tables, candle holders, and other wood items. Dad took up motorcycle riding with Rocky and a group of buddies in Riverdale.  They went to the Sturgis, SD, motorcycle rally for 21 consecutive years along with other trips to The Yellowstone, Glacier Park, and Jackson Hole just to name a few.  While wintering in AZ, Dad's hobby became golf. As Doris’s quilting became her main hobby dad started longarm quilting them. As Toni could not keep up.  For his 90th Birthday he gave away 37 quilts made by them. Camping was a lifelong hobby. They were members of the National Campers and Hikers Association and 1000 Trails. He was a lifelong Legion member. 

Ferdinand is survived by his daughter, Rhonda (Jeff) Murray, Minot; son, Rocky (Toni) Hagel, Hazen; five grandchildren, Travis Winn, Tiffany (Travis) Grosche, Taren Winn, Quay (Lesley) Hagel, and Misty (Shawn) Iverson; great-grandchildren, Hallie (Ryan), Lexi, Avrie, Dejah, Cole, Hunter, Makinly, Draven, Layka, Tryker, Ryder, Opal, Oakley and Jett; great-great-grandchildren Aria, Huxley, Everett, and Mateo; sister Emma Kramlich; brother-in-law, Stevan (Connie) Dewald; sisters-in-law, Laural Dewald, Helen Hagel and various cousins, nieces and nephews. 

Ferdinand is preceded in death by his wife Doris, his parents Adolf and Kathrina Hagel; sisters Tina Etten, Ida Malsam, Leah Reuer, brothers Edwin, Walter, David, Julius, Hilbert, Irvin, and grandson Joseph.
