Gary L. Berreth

February 6, 1944 — February 7, 2024

Gary Lee Berreth, 80, of Bismarck, ND passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024 at CHI St. Alexius Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00AM, Monday, March 18 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.

A private interment will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Gary was born on February 6, 1944 to Reuben and Freida Berreth in Elgin, ND. He attended school in Mott, ND, was valedictorian of his 1962 graduating class, and a very proud member of the ‘61 and the ‘62 boys state basketball championship teams. After high school, Gary attended North Dakota State University. He was a proud Bison and a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Upon graduation from NDSU as a civil engineer, he joined the army. He was sent to the Boston, MA area to implement his engineering knowledge to support our troops. After the army, Gary moved back to North Dakota, started a family, and began working at the North Dakota Department of Transportation. He worked there from 1968-2006. Deciding retirement wasn’t for him, he went to work for the NDSU Upper Great Plains Institute of Transportation from 2006-2013.

Gary has had a lifelong love of the outdoors and sports. He enjoyed spending time at the farm in Mott hunting or walking along the Cannonball River. In the spring, he would head the other direction to Lake Isabel and enjoy time by the water. His love of sports was everything NDSU Bison & Minnesota Vikings & Twins. He shared his passion for sports with his kids, grandkids or anyone that would listen. There was friendly banter at every family event!! Gary absolutely loved vanilla ice cream...even with 2000 flavors, he would still pick his simple favorite. He had a kind, kind heart and always wanted to surround himself with people. There wasn’t a person he couldn’t talk to. And because I know he would think that we have already made too much of a fuss, in very typical “Gary” fashion, we will end with his words, “Prop me in the corner and have a party!!”

Gary is survived by his wife, Pam of Bismarck, North Dakota; two daughters, Nicole (Jeff) Mindt of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mia (Karl) Corrigan of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren, Campbell Mindt, Jada Mindt, Sawyer Mindt, William Corrigan, Luke Corrigan, and Joseph Corrigan; three stepchildren, Nathan Kremer of Burnsville, MN, Laura Stokka of Fargo, ND, and Thomas (Kristie)  Kremer of St. Joseph, MN; six step-grandchildren, Zach Kremer, Miles Kremer, Claire Stokka, Barrett Kremer, Forrest Kremer, and Leo Kremer; stepbrother, Paul (Mary Pat) Schwartz and stepsisters, Leslie Sloan and Sylvia Payne.

He was preceded in death by his mom, Freida Berreth; dad, Reuben Berreth; stepmother, Alice Berreth.

In lieu of flowers, please direct all donations or memorials to the ND Veteran’s Cemetery or the Central Dakota Humane Society for his love of animals.
