In 1968, he entered the US Army and was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge he traveled through Europe for a few months before going back to UND to finishing his degree. Soon after that Gary opened up The Midnight Rambler Bar in Mandan, N.Dak., characteristic to Gary! Later, he became a truck driver for North American Van Lines. Gary had driven all over the lower 48 states. He then retired from many years of driving to come back to Carson to care for his parents.
