George Hertel, 80, Bismarck, passed away on May 26, 2025. A service livestream will be available at this link: https://trinitybismarck.com/funeral-livestream/
George F. Hertel was born November 24, 1944 to Albert & Frieda (Metzger) Hertel. He graduated from McLaughlin High School in 1962. George always wanted to farm, so he stayed on the family farm west of McLaughlin after graduation. He met his future wife through his his best Danny Kraft’s family; they owned the Shady Lane Drive-In, where she worked. George and Betty Bieber were married on April 26, 1968, and together they raised three children.
George was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and church board member. He was also a board member for the Farmer's Cooperative Association and the Cenex. George & Betty, with the help of volunteers, also managed the local food pantry for struggling farmers.
George had a couple of other jobs at different times in his life. He worked at the local farm store and for various neighbors. He also continued a 3rd generation tradition as an insurance agent for Northwest GF Mutual Insurance Co.
Neighbors were fortunate to have George nearby to assist with farming, branding, and butchering or whenever an extra hand was needed. He loved making and eating his homemade sausage. He loved to visit friends to play pinochle or play whatever games the grandchildren chose to play. He enjoyed attending events and concerts with his grandchildren. But his favorite pastime was putting puzzles together. George loved to tell his favorite stories repeatedly. He was especially blessed by the visits from Randy Bieber, who called him brother.
The farm was sold in 2010 when George & Betty moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. He lived in the "white house" until his death.
George is survived by his wife, Betty, of 57 years. His children Becky (Scott) Dunker of Casselton, ND, Lonny (Bridget) Hertel of Bismarck, ND, and Paul (Tia) Hertel of Pierre, SD; 3 grandchildren, Cason (Erin), Camry, and Seneca; 1 step granddaughter, Hannah; one great-granddaughter, Navy; and one sister, Delia Harsche.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Clifford Hertel, and his sister, Delaine Hartman.
