Georgiana Hoirup, 94, Bismarck, passed away on January 1, 2024.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, Jan. 8, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1919 N 2nd St., Bismarck. Visitation will be held an hour before the service begins.

Interment will be held at 3:00PM, Monday, Jan. 8, at Rosehill Cemetery in Minot.

Georgiana was born on July 23, 1929 in Howard SD, to Peter and Bertha (Sherman) Mentele. Around age six her family moved to Long Prairie, MN, where she graduated from high school in 1947 and then began working for Production Credit Association in Alexandria, MN. Georgiana was well known throughout the area for her roller-skating abilities.

In 1949, Georgiana married Raymond Johnson and together they had five children. Due to his job with the Soo Line Railroad, they moved often with a few of the towns being Burnstad ND, Eden SD and Lake City SD, before moving to Kenmare in 1963. She worked as a bookkeeper for Carlson Drug in Kenmare for many years. Georgiana and Raymond later divorced.

Georgiana learned to sew at very young age, sewing custom clothes for friends and neighbors at the age of 12, creating and cutting patterns out of newspaper. While in Burnstad she took a class in making draperies though the home extension office. Upon moving to Kenmare, she began doing seamstress work as a hobby and sideline. When JC Penny found out she was making draperies, they hired her to make them for their company. She worked for them for six years before starting Georgiana’s Draperies in 1970. She proudly grew that business until selling it in 1985.

She married Peter Hoirup in February, 1988 in Yuma AZ. They loved to travel with the old car club, square dancing and entertaining friends with huge neighborhood barbeque cook outs. When Pete passed away in July, 1996, she moved to Minot for several years before making Bismarck her final home.

In September of 2012, she moved into Edgewood Village in Bismarck, where she quickly became a favorite to so many people. She loved welcoming new residents and her smile lit up the whole room. She will forever be remembered for her quick-witted personality.

She is survived by her son, Maurice Johnson, Centennial, CO; daughters, Sharon (Leonard) Lehman, Kenmare, ND, Marilyn (Rick) Brunner, Mohall, ND and Kathy (Gary) Lewis, Grass Valley, CA; grandchildren, Stacey (Keith) Thelen, David Lehman, Matthew (Jessica) Lehman, Chad (Dana Thoreson) Brunner, Michelle Brunner, Chris (Andrea) Brunner, Allison (Jason) Morris, Justin Melby (Fiancé, Dana Yellow Bird); 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Terry (Linda) Mentele, Long Prairie, MN and several nieces and nephews. Although the time Georgiana and Pete were married was short, Georgiana considered all of Pete’s family her family. She is survived by Pete’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; son, Robby; parents, Peter and Bertha; brother, Donald Mentele and sister, Virginia Korkowski.

Memorials can be made in Georgiana’s name to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1919 N 2nd St, Bismarck, 58501, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
