Gladys was born March 3, 1928, in Detroit Lakes, MN, to Sigvald and Helen (Staska) Tveit. Gladys graduated from Mahnomen High School; continuing her education, she graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, in 1950. While at Concordia, Gladys met her future husband, Robert Duncan Bain, and they were married on June 30, 1951. Following their wedding they lived in Fargo, ND, until Bob was offered a job as insurance agent with Byrne Insurance in Bismarck. Gladys continued her teaching career after their four children were of school age. She taught math at Wachter Junior High School for ten years. During her years in Bismarck, she was an active member of Chapter AJ, P.E.O. for fifty years, which gave her a place in the “Golden Girls” P.E.O. International. Gladys was also a member of Fortnightly Study Club, Mother’s Club, Investment Club, a Girl Scout leader, and Sunday school teacher at Lutheran Church of the Cross where she and Bob were charter members.
Gladys’s interests included sewing, quilting, gardening, spending time at the cabin at Lake Audubon, singing in the church choir, snow birding for many winters in Surprise, AZ, special projects, and leadership roles on numerous boards of directors including Lutheran Church of the Cross Church Council and Concordia College Board of Regents. She always looked forward to Bible study with her church friends. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed writing, including journaling and poetry. She loved to cook, bake and can; many of her delicious recipes can be found in the Church of the Cross and Spirit of Life cookbooks. Family and friends were recipients of her many wonderful treats, favorites being her pickle relish, dill pickles, rhubarb raspberry jam and lemon curd.
Her family meant the world to her, and she always loved having them visit. She especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren and cherished their hugs. Gladys knew Jesus as her Savior and raised her children to always call on Him for guidance. The family would like to thank the staff at Edgewood on Dominion for taking such wonderful care of Gladys.
Gladys is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bain; parents, Sigvald and Helen Tveit; siblings, Baby Tveit, Arvid Tveit and Norma Weik; granddaughter, Anna Johnson; sister-in-law, Betty Bain; brother-in-law, Herb Weik.
