Obituary

Glenn W. Mitzel, 74, of Bismarck, was born on November 4, 1951, in Devils Lake, ND, to Joe and Delores Mitzel. He was raised on a farm near Esmond, ND, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and helping others; values that guided him throughout his life. Glenn went to be with the Lord on the Wednesday, January 21, 2026, passing peacefully surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held from 6-7 PM on Monday, January 26, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A rosary/vigil will be at 7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 27 at 11 AM at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1321 Braman Ave, Bismarck, ND. Burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Glenn attended Esmond Public School, where he proudly did not miss a single day of school from first grade through graduation, graduating in 1969. He later attended and graduated from Lake Region State College in 1971.

In 1971, Glenn married the love of his life, Jan (Volk), in Esmond, ND. Together they made their home in Bismarck, Minot, and then Dickinson, where they raised their two children, Dustin and Kimberly. Family was always Glenn’s greatest priority, and he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Glenn dedicated his professional life to service and integrity. He served as a general manager for McDonald’s Corporation for seven years before being employed by Eide Bailly, LLC, in Dickinson for five years. From 1983 to 2014, Glenn was an Enrolled Agent licensed to practice for the Internal Revenue Service and was self-employed in Dickinson at Mitzel Tax and Consulting Services, serving his clients as a trusted tax preparer and consultant. Following his retirement, Glenn and Jan spent two and a half years living in Fargo before moving to Bismarck.

Glenn believed deeply in giving back to his community and lived that commitment through service. He was a volunteer firefighter and served in numerous leadership roles throughout his life. He served on the Board for the North Dakota Society of Accountants and was a longtime member of both the North Dakota and National Society of Accountants. Glenn served on the Board for Southwest Water in Dickinson as well as served on the Board for the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce. He was the President on the Finance Board at Queen of Peace Church for three years. Glenn served on the Board for Dickinson United Way for four years, and was President in his final year. He was the chartered Secretary-Treasurer on the Board for the Dickinson Optimist Club at its inception and also served on the City of Dickinson’s Board of Adjustments.

Above all else, Glenn was known for his amazingly kind heart and quiet generosity. He would go out of his way to help anyone in need, never seeking recognition, simply doing what he felt was right. Glenn enjoyed golfing, playing cards and board games with his grandchildren, and loved cheering them on at their sporting events over the years.

Glenn will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Jan; his son, Dustin (Wendy) Mitzel of Fargo; his daughter, Kimberly (Chad) Heidt of Dickinson; his five grandchildren, Zach and Max of Fargo, Taylor, Kingston, and Charlotte of Dickinson; and his brothers, Roger and Darrell. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Joann (Ric) Rosencrans, Marlene (Steve) Oien, Paula (Warren) Emly, Diane Koble, and Kristi (Ross) Kornmann; his brother-in-law, Larry Volk; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Delores Mitzel; his brothers-in-law, Roger Volk, Leroy Volk, Rodney Volk, Tim Volk, Kenny Volk, Allan Edwards, and Joe Koble; and his niece, Kari Koble.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Central Dakota Humane Society or Furry Friends Rockin’ Rescue.
