Glenn was born on June 20, 1956, in Bismarck, ND. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1975 and felt the highlight of his high school years was sharing a class and meeting Mary Ustanko, which was the beginning of a friendship and love that spanned over 50 years. Glenn and Mary were married on June 6, 1975 and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in a few months. Glenn and Mary were lifelong best friends, who believed that you never take your partner for granted, and can never overuse the words, “please and thank you”.
Their family grew when their daughter, Stephanie, was born and filled their home with all the joy a child adds. When Glenn became a grandfather all his best skills were again put to use – teaching, nurturing and loving his grandsons, Colton and Evan. Glenn could be found on the floor playing with blocks and cars or at the table teaching chess, using a kind, soothing voice that encouraged understanding. Glenn strived to be the kind of grandpa that his grandsons would always remember.
Glenn attended Bismarck State College, where he studied HVAC. He was a valued member of the management team at SuperValu Warehouse for over 36 years. Glenn was known for being fair and proactive.
Glenn and Mary loved to travel. Their last big adventure took them on a cruise to Alaska in 2024. They also enjoyed numerous trips that always seemed to include several stops at antique shops along the route. Among the “treasures” found were gilded frames and old clocks. It didn’t matter if they worked or not or were neglected as Glenn had studied both frame and clock repair and restoration (self-taught) and enjoyed the precision, detail, and patience needed to find the beauty in each piece. Glenn had talent and was not afraid to share his talents with others. He has made several stained-glass projects which he has displayed throughout his home.
In 2006 Glenn bought his first Corvette and that led to Glenn and Mary becoming active members of the “Corvettes of Dakota Territory”. They thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Bowling Green, KY to visit the National Corvette Museum and made many friends through their involvement. Glenn was meticulous in the care of his car and was always willing to assist another Corvette lover with the restoring of their car. As Glenn said many times, “tires/wheels on a car have to shine”.
Glenn and Mary both were involved with the local Tai Chi club in Bismarck. They fell in love with Tai Chi after taking a local class.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Lavern (Fandrich) Siewert; parents in-law, Joseph and Lutivena (Feist) Ustanko; niece in-law, Jodi (Ustanko) Knudsen; nephew in-law, Daryn Ustanko, and brothers in-law, George, David, and James Ustanko and Rick Blank.
Glenn is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Mary; daughter and son in-law, Stephanie and Matthew Zietz; grandsons, Colton and Evan Zietz; brothers in-law, Gerald (Myrna) Ustanko, Marley (Lois) Ustanko, Daniel (Joyce) Ustanko; sisters in-law, Betty Ustanko (Lee Eslinger), Kathy Ustanko, Patricia Blank, and Tammy (William) Schmidt; brother, Ricky (Bonita) Siewert; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Lord of Life Lutheran Church Elevator Fund at 1143 N 26th Street, Bismarck, ND 58501.
A special thank you to Emily, for being Glenn’s guardian angel in his final days. May God bless you.
