Obituary

Gordon Roberge, 78 of Bismarck passed away December 13, 2025.

Cremation has taken place and a family graveside will be held in May of 2026 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Douglas, ND.

Gordon was born on October 18, 1947, in Minot, North Dakota, to LaVerne (Lies) and Rene Roberge. He grew up in Willow City and attended Notre Dame Academy, graduating in 1965. During his youth, he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball, excelling both academically and athletically. Friends from that time remember him as a happy, kind, and good natured young man—an All‑American good guy who avoided mischief and was deeply liked by classmates, teachers, and families who knew him.

After high school, Gordon attended Minot State University from 1965 to 1969 while working to support his education. Following graduation, he moved to Rolla, North Dakota, where he worked for a local entrepreneur who was establishing an amateur baseball team. Once the team was formed, Gordon played in the Manitoba Senior League, where he became known as a highly skilled pitcher. His lifelong passion for sports later led him to work for Carlson Sporting Goods in the Fargo area.

Baseball and fishing remained central to Gordon throughout his life—interests first instilled by his grandfather and uncles. He was a dedicated fan of the North Dakota State Bison, the Minnesota Twins, and the Minnesota Vikings. Anyone visiting his home would inevitably find sports on the television or radio.

Gordon spent several years living on Lake Maude in Minnesota, where he formed cherished friendships and enjoyed countless hours on the water. He treasured that time deeply. When the maintenance of his home became difficult due to his multiple sclerosis, he moved closer to family for support.

In 2008, Gordon met his son, John Schaffer, and his family. Over the years that followed, he built meaningful relationships with John, his wife Wendy, and his granddaughters, Betsy and Hannah. More recently, he took joy in the arrival of his great‑grandsons, Truett and Toren Bolton.

Gordon is survived by his son, John Schaffer (Wendy); granddaughters Betsy Schaffer and Hannah Bolton (Trevor); great grandsons Truett and Toren Bolton; sister Dianne Garrison; nieces Stephanie Garrison and Heidi Garrison; nephew Troy Garrison (Robyn); and their children, Camden Silha and Cash Garrison.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Mathew and Margaret Lies; parents Rene Roberge and LaVerne (Lies) Malling; stepfather Clifford Malling; multiple aunts and uncles; and his beloved cats, who meant the world to him.

Family and friends recall Gordon as generous, gentle, and steady in character—someone who formed lasting friendships across each chapter of his life. His presence, kindness, and humor will be deeply missed.
