Obituary

Helen Roth, 88, Mandan, formerly of Kintyre, passed away on December 14, 2025, after a long, fulfilled and richly blessed life.

A funeral service will be 9:00 AM, Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Good Samaritan Society – Miller Pointe, 3500 21st St SE, Mandan.

Burial will be held at the Kintyre Cemetery, Kintyre.

Helen was born on August 8, 1937 on the family farm south of Kintyre. She was the 4th of 6 children born to George and Esther Jutila. Helen grew up on the farm and often shared one of her fondest childhood memories, of slipping out of the house after a meal, dashing to her horse and galloping across the pasture bareback with her hair flying in the wind in order to avoid dishes. Helen attended school in Napoleon and graduated high school in 1955. She went on to attend and graduate from Valley City State, earning her teaching degree.

On June 15, 1957, Helen married her beloved, Jack Roth, in Kintyre. They had three daughters, Leann, KayAnn and Cleo.

Though Helen’s disease prevented her in the end from remembering, we, her family, remember many fond memories of her. We remember the strong faith-filled woman of God that she was. She lived out that faith through the numerous positions she held at her cherished church in Kintyre, especially her 25-year dedication as the church organist and many church ministries within the church and community. She looked forward to attending regular ladies aid meetings where open face cheese whiz sandwiches with sliced green olives on top were often served. We remember her gentle spirit of kindness and hospitality, making sure the needs of others were attended to before her own. We remember her love of reading, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, tending to her farm cats and going to polka fests with her husband and friends. We remember that despite her dislike of cooking, she daily prepared meals for her family, displaying her commitment to us. We remember her working alongside her husband to run the family farm. We remember her competitive yet fun-loving spirit, namely the chilling stories she would tell her grandkids about the eerie sounds of the “Bog Monster” who lived in our slough. We remember the weekly Saturday night dinners in Napoleon with good friends, Leo and Viola, where her and Viola would indulge in a glass of red wine paired with a piece of dark chocolate which they had smuggled along in their purse. We remember her thankful spirit, always offering a thank you or a blessing when someone did something for her. We remember how she spoke often and freely about not fearing death because she knew where she was going after her earthly journey was over, to her Heavenly home.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Leann (David) Cesario, KayAnn and Cleo; her grandchildren, Nicole (Terry), Erin (Shane), Ciara, Joshua (Katie) and Breanna (Natalie); and great-grandmother of Trevor, Ashton, Tara, Jacob, Sloan, Evan, Finnegan, Brynlee, Ember and Lennex. Helen is also survived by her sisters-in-law Annetta, Sharon and Gail Jutila, Karen Roth and brother-in-law Bill Roth (Dora).

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jack; parents, George and Esther; sister, Elsie; brothers, Donald, Ray, Vernon and Edward; and grandson, Ryan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kintyre Lutheran Church or the Kintyre Cemetery, 322 2nd St E, Napoleon, ND 58561-7021.
