Helen, daughter of Anton and Alisia (Bitz) Becker was born September 7, 1936. She grew up on a farm west of Burnstad, ND with her parents, three sisters, and seven brothers. Her religious faith, strong work ethic, and loving family relationships were instilled by her parents as a child growing up on the farm.
Helen married Anton “Tony” Schumacher on October 4, 1954. They farmed south of Napoleon, North Dakota for several years before moving to Bismarck in 1964. They were married for 62 years. Helen was a devoted wife who spent several years caring for her husband as his health declined.
Over the years Helen worked many jobs in the service industry. Her last 26 years of working took place at Herberger’s department store. She loved her job and mostly she loved interacting with people. She was sought-after by many regular customers and was a treasured employee. She continued working until the age of 80.
Helen enjoyed cooking many German dishes, hosting relatives and friends in their home, and dancing. She was the epitome of a warm and welcoming hostess. Helen was also very devoted to the Catholic faith and traditions. Helen’s greatest joy came from spending time with family. She cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. She also was blessed to live long enough to develop special relationships with her great grandchildren. Throughout her life she remained close to her siblings and their spouses. In particular, Helen’s loving relationship with her sisters was very special to her.
Helen is survived by her three sons, Bob of Bismarck; Glenn (and Linda) of Boise, Idaho; and Dan of Kuna, Idaho; and one daughter, Alicia (and Jeff Meland) of Northfield, Minnesota. Ten grandchildren: Anna (and Tony), Austin (and Corinn), Sam, Gregory, Forrest, Kailah (and Jeff), Cole, Grayce, Jackson (and Madeline), and Thomas; and three great-grandchildren: Gwen, Beau, and Maggie. Helen is also survived by four siblings: Betty, Alice (Jerry) Regner, Leo, and Leonard (Carole), brother-in-law, Sebastian (and Helen) Schumacher; and sisters-in-law Tillie, Lavata, Marvie and Francis Becker.
