Hilbert Bohrer, 94, passed away on February 7, 2024.

Hilbert R. Bohrer, was born on October, 27, 1929 at Mannhaven, ND to Richard and Helena (Masser) Bohrer. Later they moved south of Hazen, ND where he attended rural county school.

Hilbert grew up in the Hazen area where he learned the value of hard work (and maybe a few card tricks) on the family farm. He was drafted into the army in 1952, he was in service for a short time before he received his honorable medical discharge.

On December 21, 1952, he married Viola Kruckenberg at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Hazen and became a proud father of four: Keith, LeRoy, Glenda, and Kenneth.

He worked for several local farmers, helped build the mighty Garrison Dam, and farmed his own land until he was diagnosed with cancer.  They then retired and moved to Bismarck.

He was a volunteer for may years for the Stanton Rural Fire Department.

He always enjoyed a quick game of playing cards and loved to waltz and dance in his younger years. Even when it stormed they’d travel to their good neighbors Wayne and Jan Greens to play a game of cards but by the time you were done, you had three of four games played! Hilbert and Viola would go to the Knife River and fish, staying up half of the night cleaning their catches.

Retirement in Bismarck didn't mean slowing down. He enjoyed going to the hayfield with Keith to help him with haying. For him, it was just like being back on the farm doing what he liked to do best.

Hilbert is survived by his wife of 71 years, Viola; son, LeRoy (Susan); daughter, Glenda (Charnell Haak) Oestrich; brother, Ruben (Millie) Bohrer; daughter-in-law, Lisa Bohrer; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Viola W. Bohrer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Keith (Gladys), and Kenneth; brothers, Norman (Ruth), Howard and infant brother; granddaughter, Janell Bohrer and step great-grandson, Tanner Hushka.
