Janyce (Jan) Froeschle, 94, of Bismarck, passed away on July 29, 2026.

Jan was born February 21, 1932 to Julian and Nellie (Kleinjan) Shefstad, and lived near Columbus, ND. After graduating from Columbus High School, she attended Jamestown College and received an associate degree in elementary education. She met Donald Froeschle while she was teaching in Hazen, ND and they married on June 15, 1952. They lived in Hazen before moving to Bismarck in 1953 to form Froeschle Sons, Inc. with Don’s father, Julius and brother, Roland.

Jan’s lifelong passion was teaching. As an elementary teacher, she tried to instill in her students a love of learning and music, and an appreciation of nature. In the early 1970s Jan completed her Bachelor of Science degree at University of Mary and specialized in remedial reading. She continued her involvement in education by tutoring and also volunteering in school remedial reading programs. She later taught English as a second language to Cuban refugees at the Bismarck Adult Learning Center. The Spanish language, culture and music were such a fascination for her.

The greatest joy in her life was her family. She especially enjoyed the summer pontoon boating on the Missouri River with cookouts, volleyball, and sand bar golf. Then there were the special family vacations at lakes, various parks and in Hawaii, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

Jan was a devoted churchwoman. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church she sang in the choir for over 50 years, taught Sunday school and Bible School classes, served on the Board of Deacons, and enjoyed attending various Bible studies with friends, especially her beloved Trinity Thursday Morning group.

Jan loved singing, harmonizing in duets in grade school, high school trio and chorus, and Jamestown College trio and Concert Choir. She sang in a ladies’ Bismarck Symphony League choral group known as ‘Once Upon a Song’. She also enjoyed duets with her sister Joan through the years. Jan was a member of Monday Study Club, Thursday Music Club, Spanish Club, Apple Creek Country Club, and PEO. Her interests included traveling, golfing, tennis, reading, bridge, and gardening.

For many years Don and Jan went on winter golf vacations with their friends. After Don’s retirement, they did more traveling to Mexico, Central America and Europe. For over twenty years, their winter months were spent in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with many fun visits to Jan’s sister in Mesa and two nieces in New Mexico. There was a special bonus. Their daughter Lynn and husband Frank lived in San Diego and since Lynn owned her own architectural firm, it was easy to make quick trips back and forth. When Don’s brother Roland and wife Betty retired in Lake Havasu City, there were many more great mini Froeschle reunions.

After 1985 when daughter, Cindy Duehring became ill and housebound from severe pesticide poisoning, Jan did secretarial work for Cindy’s research organization, the Environmental Access Research Network (EARN), which researched the causes and effects of chemical injury. In 1999, as Cindy’s health deteriorated, Jan helped Cindy’s husband Jim as caregiver for Cindy during the last months of her life.

Jan is survived by her daughter, Lynn Froeschle of Sedona, Arizona, and her son-in-law Jim Duehring and his wife Gisele of Marquette, Michigan. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Laura Bingham and Arliss Shefstad plus several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her daughter Cindy Duehring, her parents, her brother, Julian Shefstad, her sister, Joan Schaible, and her son-in-law, Frank Fadich.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, August 25, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck. Burial will immediately follow the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Jan’s name be made to the music department at Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 N 4th St, Bismarck or to Prairie Public Broadcasting - PBS.
