Jan Biel, 91, Bismarck, passed away on November 2, 2026.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 7, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck. Burial will be held at Bowman Cemetery, Bowman at a later date.

Jan was born on June 17, 1935, to Oscar and Irene (Lininger) Nygaard in Bowman, ND. She was the oldest of four children. She attended and graduated from Bowman High School. Following graduation, she attended Dickinson State College, where she earned a degree in education.

Jan married Lowell Biel, and together they had two children, Mark and Danielle.

In her early years, she worked at USDA. After moving to Bismarck, Jan began teaching at St. Mary's Elementary. She later taught at Northridge Elementary and finished her teaching career at Dorothy Moses Elementary, where she worked as a reading teacher.

Jan enjoyed volunteering at Papa's Pumpkin Patch. She loved traveling, especially to New York, where she enjoyed attending Broadway musicals. She made it a tradition to take each of her grandchildren on a trip following their high school graduations. She also enjoyed traveling to Mexico.

Jan loved decorating for every season and holiday. She even kept a Christmas tree up year-round, changing the decorations to match the season. She had a love for clothes, jewelry, and shoes, and it seemed she had a thousand pairs! Jan had wonderful taste and style and loved getting dressed up.

She was also an entertainer who loved having friends over for coffee and went above and beyond when hosting holiday dinners. There was always an abundance of food, and no detail was overlooked. Jan also enjoyed gardening and landscaping and had many cactus plants throughout her home.

Jan was a wonderful mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She was always there for her family and took great care of those she loved. She was a feisty, witty woman with a wonderful sense of style and a love for life. She will be dearly missed.

Jan is survived by her children, Mark (Joyce) Biel and Danielle (Darrell) Bosch; grandchildren, Kara (Brian) Kniert, Mari (Sam) Golden, Jordan (Melissa) Bosch, and Alexis Bosch; great children, Steven Kniert, Reagan Kniert, Andrea Golden, Melanie Golden, and Scottie Bosch; and sister, Marie King.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Irene Nygaard; siblings, Dave Nygaard and Carol Donley.
