Obituary

Janet Elise (Pehrson) Reile, 89, of Bismarck, ND passed away December 18, 2025.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church, 214 E. Thayer Ave, Bismarck. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born on December 21, 1935, in Ludington, Michigan, to John Edward and Grace (Hjortholm) Pehrson. Throughout her childhood, she attended schools in Manitowoc and Green Bay, Wisconsin; Ludington, Michigan; and Bellwood and Maywood, Illinois. She later graduated first in her class from Jamestown High School in Jamestown, ND, in 1954.

Jae continued her education at Jamestown College, where she majored in mathematics. She also attended Rutgers University on a National Science Foundation Scholarship, reflecting her exceptional academic abilities.

On June 1, 1957, Jae married Otto Reile in Jamestown. Two children were born to this union, London Jae and Oak Randall.

Jae began her teaching career in Pingree, North Dakota, while Otto completed his college education. Together, they went on to teach in Palermo, Powers Lake, Hankinson, and again in Powers Lake, North Dakota, dedicating a total of 25 years to education in the state. Their final ten years of teaching were spent in south Texas.

Following their retirement in 1999, Jae and Otto moved to Bismarck to be closer to their children and grandchildren. There, they built their own home, became active members of the Presbyterian Church, volunteered in church and community activities, and joined a couples’ bridge club. Jae was an active member of Circle, Bad Girls’ Bible Study, the NDEA, NEA, several mathematics organizations, NDRT, TRTA, and P.E.O. Chapter AP in Bismarck. She was honored ten times by being named to Who’s Who in High School Math Teaching.

During the first sixteen years of retirement, Jae and Otto spent countless miles on the road, faithfully attending their grandchildren’s school programs in Fargo and Noonan, North Dakota. They rarely missed piano and dance recitals, choir and band concerts, athletic games and tournaments, or track and cross-country meets. They were also present for confirmations, first communions, and graduations. Through the years, Jae lovingly sewed baby quilts for each grandchild and great-grandchild—and even for those yet to be born.

Jae is survived by her husband of 68 years, Otto; her daughter, Dr. London (Greg) Jacobs, Noonan, ND and her son, Oak (Kirsten) Reile, Fargo; eight grandchildren: Sam (Jessica) Reile and children Isabella, Abigail, Jasper, Theo, and Cecilia, Grand Forks; Ben (Desiree) Reile and children Kyler, Gavin, Emmet, and Tatum, Mandan; Grace (Brian) Krippner and children, Annie and Henry, Sauk Centre, MN; Jed (Courtney) Reile and children LaShaun, Ryder, Lily, Sawyer, Olive, Kenna, Wren, Winnie and Logan, Dickinson; Dr. Mariah Jacobs, Noonan; Morgan (Kayla) Jacobs and children Lincoln and Macklin, Noonan; Isaac (Amy) Jacobs and children Brent and Henry, Noonan; and Hannah Jacobs, Noonan; sisters, Dr. Mary Alice (Jim) Simle, Fargo; Joelle Pehrson, Gurnee, IL; sister-in-law, DeLoris Kusler, Lodi, CA; and brother-in-law, Wayne (Cheryl) Reile, Redding, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Pehrson; her sister, Jonnie Irene Pehrson Miller Conrad; a great granddaughter, Evlyn Serena Reile; sisters-in-law, Violet Albrecht and Alice Reile; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gotthilf and Freida Reile and brothers-in-law, Ray Reile, Richard Albrecht, and Calvin Kusler.
