Obituary

Jean (Travis) Barth, age 95, passed away peacefully on December 31st at Baptist Health & Rehab Center in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jean was born on May 23, 1930, in St. Helens, England.

Jean (Travis) met Joseph (known as Fred) Barth in her home country of England while Fred was stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base in Cheshire, England. The two were married at the base chapel on February 24, 1951. Upon Fred’s completion of his military service, the couple moved to the USA to New England, North Dakota. In 1957, Jean and Fred moved to Hebron, ND where they became proud owners of Barth’s Super Valu grocery for 32 years. Their business was truly a family business with Jean and all children involved. Jean and Fred retired from business in 1988, and in 2015 moved from Hebron to Bismarck, ND. Jean resided at Edgewood Vista and the Baptist Care Center. Fred and Jean enjoyed 72 years of marriage.

Jean was a devoted mother. She treasured fun-filled summer days spent at Lake Tschida with family and friends. Jean loved baking, and she took immense pride in her assortment of Christmas cookies, generously sharing them with loved ones each year. Jean also enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble with family and friends, delighting in “challenging” the use of non-existent words. She loved traveling and cherished her trips back to her native land of England to see family and friends. She was strong in her Catholic faith and lived according to her Christian values throughout her life.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Fred” Barth; her parents William and Caroline Travis; sons Michael (at birth) and Duane; son-in-law Dirk Fischer; and siblings William, Frank, Jack, Florence (Winstanly), Kathleen (Thompson), and Gladys (Twigg).

She is survived by her children: Elaine Fischer, Colleyville, TX; David (Liz) Barth, Dickinson, ND; Mary Ann (Dan) Swigost, Bismarck, ND; Yvonne (Jim) Runyan, Firestone, CO; Raymond (Tami) Barth, Lakeville, MN; and daughter-in-law Shelley Barth West Fargo, ND; She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Travis Robinson, Nathan Fischer, Andrea Fischer, Justin Barth, Duane Barth, Andrew Barth, Schaan Barth, Adam Swigost, Alex Swigost, Ben Runyan, Zach Runyan, Isaiah Runyan, Brianna (Barth) Conklin, Christina (Barth) Atkinson, and Ryan Barth, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
