Joanne C.
Bavendick
January 13, 1934 – February 25, 2026
In Loving Memory of Joanne C. Bavendick, 92, of Bismarck, ND, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, at Touchmark. In accordance with Joanne’s wishes, no services will be held.
Joanne Clara Bavendick was born January 13, 1934, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Edwin and Wilma (Graham) Meyer. She grew up in Baldwin, ND, attending a one-room schoolhouse during her grade school years and cherishing fond memories with her brother and sisters. She later attended Bismarck High School, graduating in 1951. During her senior year, she was honored to be named Homecoming Queen, chosen from among 14 sponsored candidates and crowned by the mayor at the homecoming football game.
On December 5, 1953, Joanne married Frank Bavendick in Bismarck, where they began building their life together and raising their three children. Joanne treasured being a devoted stay-at-home mother and took great pride in supporting her children in all of their activities.
Over the years, Joanne and Frank made their home in Bismarck, where their daughter, Kelli, was born; Denver, CO, where their son Greg was born; and Casper, WY, where their son Brad was born. In 1962, they returned to Bismarck, and in 1965, they built their home in Highland Acres, where Joanne resided for 56 years. She found great joy in entertaining friends and family at her home. Joanne enjoyed her backyard and swimming in the pool.
Joanne and Frank shared a love of travel and were fortunate enough to have visited all 50 states and numerous countries. They treasured time spent at their condo in Keystone, CO, where they enjoyed skiing and entertaining friends and family; at their home in Coronado, CA; and at their log home south of Bismarck on Lake Oahe.
During her time in Bismarck, Joanne established deep roots and a lifetime of cherished friendships. She was known by many for her kindness, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. Joanne was also a patriot. She had a great love for this country and was proud to be an American.
An animal lover throughout her life, Joanne had many beloved pets but especially treasured her daily walks with her dog, Millie. Joanne’s greatest pride was her family. She deeply loved being a grandmother and found great joy in supporting and cheering on her grandchildren at their activities and sporting events.
In final years, Joanne continued to give generously to her community. She served as a lead donor to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation’s Wild Horse Place Apartments, Bismarck State College’s new Athletic Center, and the Dakota Humane Society’s new shelter. She also contributed to Mandan Parks and Recreation for a grandstand at the new rodeo grounds.
Joanne is survived by her children, Kelli (Jeff) Herman and Greg (Yvette) Bavendick; grandson, Kyle (Kristen) Herman; great-grandchildren, Kira and Kamden Herman; step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Derrick (Amanda) Hecker and their children Hunter and Ryder, Nathan Hecker and his daughter Hailie, and Mathew (Heather) Hecker and their children Carson, Mason, and Tyson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was welcomed into Heaven by her parents; sisters, Jean (Leo) Bickler and Leone (Gene) Strandemo; brother, Wayne (Rosie) Meyer; beloved husband, Frank; son, Brad; grandson, Tyler (TJ) Herman; and beloved pets.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Touchmark and Caring Edge Hospice for their comfort and compassionate care.
