Obituary

Karen Faith Olivia Humann Sakellariou, age 83, entered into rest on January 10, 2026.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 2:00 p.m., at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, ND 58503.

Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck.

Karen was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, to John and Elizabeth (Goehring) Humann. She was raised on a farm south of Hazelton, where she helped her mother with household chores while her brothers assisted with the farm work.

After graduating from Hazelton High School, Karen moved to Minot to attend Minot State Teachers College. She completed her degree and went on to teach English in Max, North Dakota. While teaching, Karen met Argyrios (Art) Sakellariou, and they were married in December 1963 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hazelton. Art’s work took the family to Seattle, Washington, and McKeesport, Pennsylvania. In 1975, Karen returned to Minot to raise her children and worked as a seamstress while attending night school to become an addiction counselor. After completing the LADC program, she moved the family to Dickinson and worked for Badlands Human Service Center until her retirement in 2008. Throughout her dedicated career, Karen supported countless individuals and groups through their recovery.

Karen loved stamp and coin collecting, puzzles, and was an avid reader. She enjoyed folk music and yacht rock and found delight in taking her grandchildren to the carrousel at Lark’s Toys in Kellogg, MN.

Karen is survived by her son, John Sakellariou (Jennifer), of Cloquet; her grandchildren, Ellen Sakellariou and Gus Sakellariou; her brothers, Larry Humann (Ramona) and Richard Humann (Karen); and her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Humann and Gladys Humann.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Argyrios Sakellariou; her son, George Sakellariou; her parents, John and Elizabeth Humann; her brothers, Byron Humann, Vernon Humann, and Tom Humann; and her sister, Lorna Ohlhauser.
