LaVerne Gertz Parkin

May 14, 1931 — December 26, 2020

LaVerne (Lien) Gertz Parkin, Mandan, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2020 at Sanford Health, Bismarck, surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.

Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

LaVerne was born one of two twins on May 14, 1931 in Bismarck to Andy and Clara (Johnson) Lien, Steele. LaVerne married Myron (Don) Gertz in July 1948. She taught Sunday and Bible school, sang in the choir and directed the junior choir. LaVerne also spent time volunteering.

She loved camping, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Her favorite sport was bowling.

Her husband, Don, passed away in 1999. She married Harold “Parky” Parkin in 2000.

LaVerne is survived by her daughter, Jeanette (Gertz) Kungel, Jamestown; son, David (Louayne) Gertz, Mandan; grandsons, Patrick and Michael LaVielle, Seattle, Wash., James Gertz, Moorhead, Minn.; granddaughter, Marissa Rath, Bismarck; great-grandsons, Ryan LaVielle and Alaric Rath; great-granddaughters, Kelly and Chloe LaVielle; brother, DeWayne Lien, Gilette, Wyo.; step son, Scott (Rebecca) Parkin and family, Mandan; her Helbling kids; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Melford; sister, LaVonne; her husband, Don, of 51 years; and husband, Parky, of 17 years; and son-in-law, Darwin Kungel.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to American Lutheran Church, 1101 10th St. SE, Mandan, ND, 58554, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
