Leif Eric Everson was born in Littleton, Colorado on March 24, 1997. He was proudly named after the famous Norse Viking explorer, Leif Erikson. From the beginning, Leif was a quietly observant child. He loved playing and organizing his toys by shape or color. Leif’s ability to ride a bike at a young age made his father so very happy, as they went on routine neighborhood bike rides to the park. On his 6th birthday, he asked his mom for a globe, as he was fascinated with world geography. Leif and his family embarked on several family hiking trips while living in Colorado, finding his love for the outdoors, which became another lifelong activity he continued to enjoy.
When his family moved to Bismarck in 2003, Leif enjoyed many sports. He was a speedy little soccer player, with relentless energy on the pitch. Leif loved basketball, and would shoot baskets frequently in the back yard. He loved to play chess, too. Leif and his cousins enjoyed engaging in mischief at the Raging Rivers Water Park, which may or may not have led to an early removal from the premises. Leif, Bryce, and Seth all became excellent snowboarders spending much time together at Big Sky, Montana with his dad and Crystal, having fun in the hot tub together on family trips. Leif had a special niece, Oakleigh, that melted Leif’s heart to the point that he became the favorite uncle for her to sit on his lap. He took her to the new arcade at Kirkwood mall for a special play date.
Leif was a loyal friend and would do anything for his buddies. When he joined track and cross-country, he became part of a “squad” of boys who were like a second family. Leif had a true passion for running. He enjoyed challenging the limits of his endurance.
Leif’s penchant for geography later morphed into a love of travel. He accompanied his family on many road trips, island vacations, and cruises. He was a great travel buddy, and his easy going, no-drama personality was appreciated whenever he was along. He had a map of the world on his wall and he would stick pins in it wherever his next adventure took him. His passion for travel became the highlight of his adult years. Family remained a priority for Leif throughout his life. He was not the loudest person at the dinner table (that would be Bryce), but if you asked him a question, you could be sure you would receive an insightful response. For those who truly knew him, it was clear he was one of the funniest and most talented people you could ever meet. He never sought the spotlight, so this was not always immediately apparent, but once he let you in, he would run the table in Pool while effortlessly explaining distinctions in philosophical perspectives, and rapping every lyric to a ’90s song. Many evenings were spent playing Magic with his brothers, and the house was filled with laughter and spirited competition as Leif organized poker parties so he could quietly outwit us all.
Leif is survived by his parents, Jeanne Metzger and Paul Everson (Crystal Binstock); his brothers, Bryce Everson, Seth Binstock, and Ben Luke Metzger (Anna); his niece, Oakleigh Binstock; his grandfather, James Kremers; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Leif was preceded in death by grandparents, MaryPat and Larry Everson, Elaine Kremers; and stepdad, Rocky Metzger.
