Leo Lucas Johs passed away on October 29, 2025 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.
Leo was born on a farm SE of Napoleon, ND on October 18, 1932 to Sebastian and Elizabeth (Wagner) Johs. A year later the family moved to a farm in Burnstad, ND in Logan County, where he was raised. Leo was drafted in 1953 and served in the US Army for two years in the time of the Korean conflict. After his military service, he enrolled at Bismarck Junior College and then transferred to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1959.
Leo began his career at North Dakota Farmers Union in Jamestown ND, then spent two years working with the State of North Dakota Auditor's Office in Bismarck. He spent the rest of his career working for Farmers Union Insurance in Jamestown ND. He also was a volunteer with the Jamestown Community Credit Union serving on the Supervisory Committee and Board of Directors for 29 years. He retired in 1994.
Leo married Lillian Hellman on February 7, 1959. Together they raised their four children: Scott, Bruce, Nancy, and Rich in Jamestown ND. Leo and Lillian spent most of their retirement years in Mesa AZ where they enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, and socializing with their many friends and family. They moved to Bismarck in 2022.
Leo is survived by his wife, Lillian; sons, Scott (Scottsdale AZ), Bruce (Scottsdale AZ), Rich (West Burlington IA); and daughter, Nancy (Steve) Neff (Sioux Falls SD); sister, Mary Ann (Larry) Leier (Valley City ND); and brother, Edward Johs (Fargo ND). He also is survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lillian Scherr and Pauline Fettig; brother, Anton Johs; and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Johs.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 3, 2025, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1919 N 2nd St, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass.
Burial will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, November 3, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
