Leona Fried, 88, of Bismarck ND, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023, in Bismarck, ND, while living at Edgewood Dominion in the Memory Care Unit.
Funeral Services for Leona will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 31, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Leona Esther (Schatz) Fried was born May 12, 1934, to Jacob and Olga (Nicklaus) Schatz. Leona was the fourth child of six and was raised in the Elgin/New Salem area. She graduated from New Salem High School in 1952. Following graduation, Leona moved to Bismarck where she was employed as a telephone operator with Bell Telephone until meeting and marrying Wilbert Fried on Dec. 27, 1955. Wilbert and Leona farmed and lived in the Hazelton area where they raised their three daughters.
Leona worked for many years at the Bank of Hazelton. In 1979, Wilbert and Leona moved to Bismarck where they lived out their remaining years. Leona worked for Norwest Bank, Workforce Safety and became a Kelly girl for a while at various businesses.
Leona enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and trips to the casino. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and doing the Bismarck Tribune crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her three daughters, Debra Selland, Kathy (Ron) Biegler, and Rhonda Smisek; six grandchildren, Randy (Brandy) Selland, Kristin (Rance) Schmidt, Greg (Marny) Lang, Kimberly Lang (Kevin Ewalt), Dustin Lang (Kayla Meyer), and Michael Smisek; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Betty (Jim) Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert; parents, Jacob and Olga; stepfather, Fred Lehrke; and four siblings, Dolores Green, Adeline Hillard, Ray Schatz, and Darlene Sterna.
