Lois L. Schneider, 93, Steele, ND passed away August 3, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 6 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, Bismarck. Family will greet guests beginning at 9 a.m.
Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Lois was born to Ben and Anna (Maart) Kunkel on April 22, 1933 on a farm near New Salem. She was raised and educated in New Salem, graduating high school in 1951. She attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck. While attending college, she accepted a position at Person and Gustin CPA.
On April 5, 1955 Lois married Raphael “Ray” Schneider in New Salem, ND. Life took Lois and Ray on many different adventures, including residing in New Salem, ND and Sacramento, California before they settled in Steele, ND. Lois loved to join Ray on the dancefloor to dance the night away! The two enjoyed 51 years together before Ray’s passing in 2006. Later in life while Ray was struggling with his health, Lois was often referred to as his nurse. Her protectiveness and care was credited for keeping Ray alive over his 13-year cancer battle.
While Lois and Ray’s three children were young, Lois stayed home to raise them. She prioritized being involved in her children’s lives, including being a 4-H leader. When her children went to school, Lois began her career at Soil Conservation Service as a district clerk. She was later employed at FmHA for 17 years prior to her retirement in 1994.
Lois was a social butterfly. She was in many clubs, including library club, bridge club, and many bowling leagues. She was an excellent card player and belong to Bridge Club for over 30 years. She was a member of the Steele Homemakers and Secretary for the Central Dakota Convalescent Homes. As an active member of the Steele First Presbyterian Church, Lois was Clerk of the Session and Secretary of Presbyterian Women. Additionally, she was a member of the Golden Age Club and the Active Seniors Club. In her spare time outside of socializing (if there was any!), she enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. Through the years, Lois perfected her second passion: the art of the afternoon snooze. Despite her packed schedule, she never missed an opportunity to recharge, earning herself the affectionate family title of “The Sofa Lizard.”
Lois was a self-made seamstress, teaching herself how to sew while taking Home Ec class in school. Over the years, she sewed not only her children’s clothes, but made sure their dolls had outfits, too!
Lois is survived by her daughters, Carole (Mike) Ries and Candace (John) Ulmer; grandchildren, Megan (Dylan) Schmer, Drew (Lisa) Ulmer, Chris (Dana) Schneider, Nicole (Andrey) Borkovskiy, and Kyle Schneider; great-grandchildren, Owen and Lachlan Schmer, Estella Henderson and Sybil Ulmer, Emmalyn and Isabelle Schneider, and Sofia, Nikolai, and Alina Borkovskiy.
She was preceded in death by her son, Paul (Renee) Schneider; husband, Ray Schneider; five siblings; and her parents.
Lois lived a full, joyful 93 years. In her honor, grab a good book, attempt a crossword, and don't hesitate to take a long, guilt-free nap on the couch!
The family requests memorials be directed to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, 4606 Hwy 1806, Mandan, ND 58554.
