Loretta was born on Aug. 13, 1934 to Peter and Katherine (Huck) Schafer. She grew up in Glen Ullin. On Sept. 10, 1956, Loretta married Richard Schantz and together they raised 9 children. Loretta loved and dedicated herself to providing a happy home for her children as well as many others that she did daycare for. She had a generous heart and opened her doors to many and loved them as her own. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to her all the way to the end, especially her little helper Porter who was by her bedside checking on her through it all. No matter how weak Loretta was Porter would put a smile on her face as he entered the room.

She enjoyed entertaining and would host a party for anyone coming to visit, all were welcome and you never left hungry. Her only requirement was if you were spending a Saturday night you were going to church Sunday morning. Loretta was a woman of strong faith and raised her family knowing the Lord. If she felt you were going down the wrong path in life she made sure to try and redirect you. She was always there when you needed her. Her love was true and abundant. Music and dancing were some of her joys in life. Many hours were spent dancing with mom in the kitchen as her records were playing. On Friday and Saturday nights if there was music downtown you could find Richard and Loretta dancing the night away with their dear friends, Frankie and Ellen Schafer. When the bands stopped playing, the new music to Loretta’s ears was the sound of slot machines at Prairie Knights. She never turned down a ride to the casino or bus trip to Deadwood.

Loretta was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and many good friends. She is survived by her 9 children; Terry (Shelby) Schantz, Glen Ullin; Dale (Ruby) Schantz, Peoria, AZ; Tammy (Gaylen) Schirado, Naples, ID; Lorie (Mitch) Gerving, Glen Ullin; Linda (Gary) Stenzel, Niagara Falls, NY; Russell (Vicky) Schantz, Golden Valley, ND; Joanie (Tim) Puchtler, Sunapee, NH; Rick (Tina) Schantz, Beulah, ND; Mary (Aric) Bandle, Bismarck, ND; 23 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two sisters and one brother.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents; four sisters and five brothers.
